Amid the fumes of generators and the deafening noise of heavy machinery clearing massive concrete slabs, it feels like a race against time.

Teams deployed from Türkiye under the coordination of AFAD are working with the same unwavering dedication as the Venezuelan search and rescue teams. Our race against time began the very moment we set foot on the ground, still able to feel the earth trembling ever so slightly beneath us. Mountains of concrete, cracked roads, and debris stretching all the way to the coastline…

At the temporary coordination center established near the port, we first received a situational briefing alongside the teams deployed from Türkiye. As specialist personnel from AFAD, UMKE, and civil society organizations arriving one after another sorted the relief supplies and search-and-rescue equipment unloaded from the aircraft, we gathered around the latest situation map laid out by the local authorities to assess the response priorities.

Our President, Prof. Dr. Fatma Meriç Yılmaz, met with Mohammed Abdus Salam, the newly appointed President of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, in Dhaka and conveyed her best wishes for success in his new role.

During the meeting, which was also attended by our Director General for International Affairs and Migration Services, Alper Küçük, the parties discussed opportunities for cooperation between the Turkish Red Crescent and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. Our President, Prof. Dr. Fatma Meriç Yılmaz, met with Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, as part of her visit to Bangladesh. Türkiye’s Ambassador to Dhaka, Ramis Şen, and our Director General for International Affairs and Migration Services, Alper Küçük, also attended the meeting.

During the visit, discussions focused on opportunities for humanitarian cooperation and relief activities between Türkiye and Bangladesh. The parties also reviewed the humanitarian projects being implemented jointly by the Turkish Red Crescent and the Bangladesh Red Crescent for Rohingya refugees who were forced to seek refuge in Bangladesh from Myanmar. Views were exchanged on ongoing efforts and potential areas for further collaboration.

A protocol was signed to strengthen cooperation between Türkiye and South Korea in the field of humanitarian assistance.

The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Sukjong BOO, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ankara; Kihyuk Nam, Türkiye Representative of the Korean Red Cross; our President Prof. Dr. Fatma Meriç Yılmaz; and Alper Küçük, our Director General of International Relations and Migration Services.

Through this cooperation, the aim is to enhance disaster response capacity, develop joint projects, and deliver more effective support to people in need.
