Y-Adapt Training of Trainers (TOT) | 7–11 September 2026 | Cook Islands

Meitaki Mā’ata, Cook Islands Red Cross Society, for the warm Pacific welcome and wonderful hospitality extended to our Disaster Manager, Mrs. Marika Tupou, during her participation in the Y-Adapt Training of Trainers (TOT) for the Youth Adaptation Project on Climate Change in the Cook Is. 🌏🌴

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, share experiences, and strengthen our knowledge alongside fellow Red Cross colleagues from across the Pacific.

Mrs. Tupou returns to Tonga with new knowledge, skills, and experiences, ready to support the rollout of Y-Adapt in Tonga and empower young people to take meaningful action on climate change and build more resilient communities.

"Remembering the 30th of September 2009 - Tsunami Event in Niuatoputapu Is"

On this day 17 years ago, we remember the devastating tsunami that struck Niuatoputapu which families lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods were destroyed, and the community experienced unimaginable loss and hardship. The impacts of that tragic event remain part of the memories and stories of the people of Niuatoputapu. 🕊️❤️

As we remember those who lost their lives and honour the families and communities affected, we also acknowledge the humanitarian responders, volunteers, partners, and international donors who came together during that difficult time to provide assistance, support affected families, and help alleviated human suffering.

Among those who responded was Mr. Sione Talifolau Lihau, our Senior First Aid Instructor, who was among the first responders travelled on the VOEA boat to Niuatoputapu. He supported the initial response and assisted the staff at Likamonu Hospital, which was temporarily operating at the LDS Hihifo Chapel.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr. Lihau shared:

“It was my first time experiencing a tsunami event with such devastating damage. I was able to apply my first aid knowledge to help save lives.”

His experience reminds us that knowledge and skills can make a difference when disaster strikes.

Today, through the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) Training under the Tala Kei Kapa Project 2026–2030, we continue this commitment by equipping communities with the knowledge and skills to prepare, respond, and protect lives. The following two days will deliver First Aid Training to equip the participants with knowledges to save lives.

~Strengthening our Disaster Preparedness through Tala Kei Kapa Project 2026 -2030.

As part of this project, we have successfully completed the procurement and replenishment of our Non-Food Items (NFIs) in Niuatoputapu, strengthening our preparedness and readiness to respond effectively to disasters and support communities when they need it most.

The replenishment includes essential relief items such as hygiene kits, tarpaulins, shelter toolkits, blankets, solar lights, buckets, kitchen sets, mosquito nets, water containers etc.

These NFIs are an important part of our disaster preparedness and response, helping ensure that essential items are in good condition, available and ready to be distributed to affected communities following cyclones, floods, tsunamis, volcanic events, and other emergencies.

A big mālō ‘aupito Australia in Tonga and the Australian Government for financial support this project and investing in stronger, more prepared communities across Tonga. 🇦🇺🇹🇴

Day 1: Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) Training – Niuatoputapu 🇹🇴

Today marked the beginning of the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) training in Niuatoputapu. The training brought together members of the Village Disaster Risk Management Committees, community/church leaders, relevant stakeholders, and government representatives.

The training aims to strengthen the knowledge, skills, preparedness, and capacity of communities to better understand and manage disaster risks, reduce their impacts, and protect the lives, livelihoods, and assets of their communities.

It is encouraging to see different stakeholders coming together because disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility, and we all have a role to play in building safer and more resilient communities.

A heartfelt thank you to the Australia in Tonga for your continued support and commitment to communities across Tonga. Your kind support helps us strengthen disaster preparedness, resilience, and community capacity, particularly in our remote island communities.

Thank you to the Tonga National Disaster Risk Management Office - NDRMO for your kind assistance and support in reviewing and approving our training materials for delivery in Niuatoputapu.

A Heartfelt Thank You 🙏

A huge thank you to the Minister and the Women's Group (Kulupu Kakai Fefine) of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (FWCT), Funga'onetaka, Navutoka, for their incredible kindness and generosity towards the OTA (ʻOfa-Tui-Mo e Amanaki) Centre.

On Tuesday, 22 September at 12:00 p.m., the wonderful mothers and members of the FWC (Navutoka) visited the OTA Centre and presented a generous donation of food items to support our children and beneficiaries.

These essential provisions will go a long way in supporting the daily care, nutrition, and programmes provided at the centre. Your thoughtful contribution reflects the true spirit of Fetokoniʻaki (mutual support) and the strength of community working together to make a difference.

The Tonga Red Cross Society and the OTA Centre are deeply grateful for your ongoing love, compassion, and support of our mission.

PUBLIC NOTICE – EXERCISE TAUFATAHI 2026

Please be advised that tsunami evacuation drill will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 September 2026, from 9:00 AM–10:00 AM in selected areas of Sopu ‘O Taufa‘ahau, Kolomotu‘a District.

Traffic may be temporarily affected along Hala Hihifo Road and Sunia ‘Akaveka Road. Please use alternative routes where possible, follow traffic control directions, and keep evacuation routes clear.

Tsunami sirens will be activated during the exercise.

THIS IS A DRILL ONLY – PLEASE DO NOT BE ALARMED.
