📦 Preparedness in Action: Supplies Ready for Vava’u

A shipment of essential supplies is now ready for Vava’u, where it will be pre-positioned with FALE members and communities as part of ongoing preparedness and response efforts to El Niño.

The shipment includes WASH kits, food supplies and portable water stations to support communities in preparing for potential impacts.

This work is being carried out in collaboration with FALE members in Ha’apai and ‘Eua, strengthening community-level preparedness and ensuring essential resources are closer to where they are needed.

The Civil Society Forum of Tonga (CSFT) is seeking a motivated and experienced Project Officer (Governance) to join our team and lead an exciting programme focused on strengthening citizen participation in Tonga’s budget cycle.

The role will contribute to:
🔹 Leading pre-budget consultations across Tonga
🔹 Supporting the rollout of the Citizen’s Budget Guide
🔹 Convening CSOs and developing a collective budget submission to Government
🔹 Delivering a Debt Management Symposium
🔹 Monitoring and publishing budget ex*****on information
🔹 Promoting meaningful participation of women, people with disabilities and outer-island communities

We’re looking for someone with:
✅ 3+ years’ experience in project management, community development, advocacy or public policy
✅ Strong written English and fluency in Tongan
✅ Community consultation and facilitation experience
✅ Understanding of public financial management and Tonga’s budget cycle
✅ Donor reporting experience
✅ Willingness to travel to Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua

📍 Location: Nuku’alofa + outer islands
🕐 Position: Full-time, 12-month fixed term

🌺 “Treat Culture as Infrastructure — Not an Obstacle. Fund the Talanoa and Formalize Community and Youth Engagements… This is Fundamental in Our Response.” — Olive Mafi

Following our earlier post highlighting Dr ‘Ana Mahe’s research at the Pacific HIV Symposium in Nadi, we are also proud to see Olive Mafi, CSFT staff member and Board Executive of the Pacific Youth Council (PYC), contributing to this important regional dialogue.

Olive joined the conversation alongside the Tonga Leitis Association Inc., Tonga Family Health Association and fellow civil society organisations, with the support of Public Health and the Ministry of Health Tonga, discussing how we can strengthen our collective work in addressing HIV and communicable diseases.

For Tonga and the wider Pacific, prevention is better than cure. We need to learn from Fiji and our neighbouring Pacific Island countries, share knowledge and experiences, and ensure our people are equipped with the information, skills and support they need to prevent, manage and respond to HIV.

This also means creating spaces where young people, communities, CSOs, health professionals, traditional and faith leaders can come together for talanoa and shape responses that are culturally grounded, youth-led and community-owned.

Preparedness is key. When we work together, learn from one another and strengthen our communities, we are better equipped to respond to challenges that affect the health and wellbeing of our people. 🤝🏽🌺

Today, we honour the humanitarian actors in Tonga and around the world who continue to serve with commitment, compassion and dedication. 🤝🌏

From local communities to national and international partners, humanitarian action is strongest when it is locally led, community-driven and inclusive.

We acknowledge the vital contributions of youth, women, civil society organisations, volunteers and community leaders who are helping build more disaster-resilient communities and ensuring that those most affected are at the heart of the solutions.

Through localisation, community-led action, youth engagement, women’s empowerment and strong CSO coordination, we can strengthen our collective ability to prepare, respond and recover.

At the heart of this work is FALE — our humanitarian hub for CSOs and communities in Tonga, providing a space for coordination, connection, information sharing and collective action when it matters most. 🏠🤝

To all humanitarian actors in Tonga and across the globe: thank you for showing up, standing with communities and continuing to make a difference. 💙

🤝 FFOV Small Grants Programme | First Round Grant Signing

On 13 August 2026, the first round of grantees under the Families Free of Violence (FFOV) Small Grants Programme came together for their official grant signing.

Congratulations to our first-round grantees:

✍️Tonga Boxing Federation — Amanda Manakofua
✍️Tonga National Youth Congress 2026 — Akanesi Hafoka

The signing brought together representatives from the grantee organisations, the FFOV team — Stephen Powell, Kilisitina ’Akauola and Cynthia ’Otumuli — and CSFT’s FFOV Small Grants Programme Officer, Mele Tuita.

The Families Free of Violence (FFOV) Programme is an Australian Government-funded initiative led by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), supporting the Government of Tonga to strengthen its response to gender-based violence (GBV). The programme contributes to Australia’s regional gender programme, Pacific Women Lead.

Through its role in FFOV, Civil Society Forum of Tonga (CSFT) supports increased awareness and engagement by diverse Community Service Organisations in the implementation of the Family Protection Act and the Tonga National Service Delivery Protocol.

We look forward to seeing the important work these organisations will undertake through their funded initiatives and the contribution they will make to strengthening community responses to GBV in Tonga. 🇹🇴

Dr ’Ana Mahe is representing Tonga at the Pacific HIV Symposium in Nadi, Fiji, where she presented her research through a poster presentation on HIV infection and associated risk factors among the Tongan prison population.

We’re proud to see Tongan health professionals contributing research and knowledge to important regional conversations on HIV and public health. 🇹🇴🌏
