As part of celebrating the Rotary life of Dr ‘Amanaki Fakakovikaetau we are sharing some of our memories and photos of his many contributions.
‘Amanaki has been an active supporter of Rotary for many years.
He was twice President and earned a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions. This is an important recognition to those Rotarians who have made a significant contribution to Rotary service and fellowship. In the last few years, he was made an Honoury life member but continued to contribute time and effort.
‘Amanaki has helped lead and organize many projects in Tonga. In partnership with various other clubs, as part of international fellowship from many countries, he helped drive projects to improve schools, and expand the dental services throughout the Kingdom.
He mobilized various sources of support beyond dental services as part of his support to the Rotary’s partnership with the Ministry of Health. This has included assistance from Rotary Donations In-kind, and significant items such as several ambulances from partners like the South Australian Ambulance Service.
Without ‘Amanaki efforts and understanding of the Tongan health system, many of these projects would not have progressed.
In addition to helping with the detailed negotiations and arrangements with projects, ‘Amanaki was happy to get involved with the detailed work of emptying containers and helping run children fund days, and Rotary BBQs. He also enjoyed participating in the Rotary golf days.
We hope that his commitment and example will continue to service as an encouragement to present and future members of the Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa to help maintain and build Rotary service and fellowship in Tonga.
