Vava'u Ocean Initiative A partnership between the Government of Tonga, VEPA and Waitt Institute to support ocean health and community well-being in Vava'u, Tonga.

The Vava’u Ocean Initiative is a partnership between the Government of Tonga (including the Vava’u Governor’s Office, the Department of Environment (MEIDECC), and the Ministry of Fisheries), the Vava’u Environmental Protection Association (VEPA), and the Waitt Institute. It is designed to support improved sustainability, profitability, and enjoyment of Tonga’s waters, including achieving healthier

ecosystems, improved fishing catches, strengthened coastal livelihoods, improved climate resilience and climate smart marine management practices. Specifically, the Initiative will focus on three core areas of work: (1) improving our understanding of Vava’u’s ocean ecosystems and resources, (2) supporting development and implementation of Special Management Areas, and (3) supporting development of marine spatial planning on Vava’u.
