A tractor operation and maintenance workshop was conducted last Friday to strengthen the capacity of community representatives to safely operate and maintain tractors provided to their communities. Representatives from Tongatapu included Ha’atafu, ‘Eueiki, representatives from Ha'apai including Tungua, ‘Uiha, Felemea, and representative from Vava'u from Falevai community - participated in the training.

The workshop led by Agricultural expert Mr. Tevita Tukia provided practical guidance on basic tractor operation, routine maintenance, safety procedures, and proper handling of equipment. Participants were given opportunities to gain hands-on experience and develop the skills needed to operate the tractors safely and efficiently, while also carrying out basic checks and maintenance to reduce breakdowns and extend the lifespan of the machinery.

The training strengthened the confidence and technical capacity of community representatives to take responsibility for the proper use, care, and maintenance of their tractors, supporting the sustainability of community agricultural activities.

The MOU signed between University of Sunshine Coast and MORDI Tonga is a great milestone for the organization. A week-long writing workshop was held at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, as part of the ACIAR Pacific regional project, Adopting a Gender-Inclusive Participatory Approach to Reducing Horticultural Food Loss in the Pacific. The project spanned from August 2022 to the end of this year.
The project covered the islands of Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Tonga. The lead organization on this impactful research was Scientific Research Organization of Samoa (SROS) and was supported by Australian lead experts.

The core objectives of the project aimed to:
🌱Investigate and remediate post-harvest horticultural food loss in Pacific Island value chains.
🌱Apply gender-sensitive frameworks to address unequal decision-making power, particularly for women market vendors and farmers.
🌱Widen fruit and vegetable availability to improve local diets, nutrition, and affordability.
🌱Implement practical, low-cost intervention trials, surveys, and technical training

Sitting in on the District Fono called by the District Officer for the District of Nukunuku - the staff were present with members of Lakepa community. During the discussions in the fono, an opportunity for the staff was provided to return their updated Community Development Plan (CDP). Following a quick review, the community discussed and agreed on the first sub-project.

The establishment of the necessary sub-committee was also on the agenda as they will provide overall oversight for the project. Their roles and responsibilities will be discussed to ensure great attention is paid towards their contribution to the development of their community.

Moving forward, there will be several meetings with the sub-committee of which we will keep you informed here.

Meeting with Talasiu water sub-committee took place this week in which members fo the committee worked together to finalize their sub-project grant proposal form. This has been a culmination of various community consultations, agreeance based on Community Development Plan (CDP) recently updated and the establishment of the committee.

The members have been very resourceful in collaboration and their collective efforts in developing and establishing baseline information and due processes that will enable successful implementation. Their grant proposal will be reviewed by the Project Review and Appraisal Committee (PRAC). During these deliberations the team will update the committee of the status and informing them on next steps to take.

Joining the rows of vegetables this week is a new addition of bell peppers in the Redfire variety. As the staff made short work of planting the seedlings into the garden bed, we hope to see in the coming weeks successful transplanting and the eventual fruits of the staff's labor.

As usual, the produce will be harvested and processed for the seeds to continue growing or packaged for distribution to our target communities. Sowing a seed today can help you grow more for tomorrow.

Following several meetings with 'Atata Si'i community, the staff have returned to update members of the community water sub-committee of the progress and status of their community project.

Maintaining constant communication with the committee allows for greater transparency and encourage continued participation from the members. These meetings will be conveyed to the people, allowing for the committee to have greater ownership of their development initiative.

The Heilala tree (Garcinia sessilis) is a deeply cultural and traditionally significant plant to Tonga. It symbolizes femininity, royalty, grace and most notably for its unique fragrance. Many would point out that it amongst the most difficult to propagate, which lends to the mythical stories that the tree itself was stolen from Pulotu - a spiritual ancestral world of nobility.

At our nurseries we have been fortunate to work alongside local partners who have seemed to master the science of propagating Heilala. As such our staff are diligently working to keep them alive and well. Ornamental, traditional, medicinal plants are just as important to preserve as fruiting trees. They are part of our identities and are a continuation of our traditions and cultures.

A meeting with water sub-committee of Ha'utu community included our staff. To move the sub-project along, their attendance was critical to formulate and develop a physical mapping exercise. This helps bring together their local knowledge of resources including water sources for the community.

Once this was finalized, the members collaborated to complete an internal organizational analysis. From the offset, this is helpful to determine gaps and challenges that can impede project implementation including identifying strengths and opportunities to improve the functioning of the committee. We are thankful that members volunteer their time for the betterment of their community and all share the same aspirations of a developed community.
