🔭 Did you know a woman from 10th century Syria has an asteroid named after her?

Her name was Mariam al-Ijliya al-Astrolabi. A master astrolabe maker in Aleppo, she trained in Baghdad and improved ancient Greek designs. Her instruments guided sailors home, marked prayer times, and confirmed the start of Ramadan for countless families.

She served at the court of Sayf al-Dawla, sitting among the greatest minds of her age.

Not one of her astrolabes survives. But the stars remembered her.

In 1990, an asteroid was named 7060 Al-ʻIjliya in her honor.

This Ramadan, IEEE Women in Engineering presents "Stars of the Golden Age."
