🌿 RIVERS Start-up Workshop Successfully Completed!

ADRA Timor-Leste has successfully completed the RIVERS Start-up Workshop, marking an important milestone in preparing for the programme’s implementation. The workshop was led by Mana Joanne Wieland from ADRA New Zealand, bringing the team together to strengthen collaboration, align priorities, and establish a shared vision for the programme.

In partnership with ADRA New Zealand and funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the RIVERS programme aims to promote resilient, inclusive and sustainable ecosystems and livelihoods in Viqueque Municipality.
The workshop provided an opportunity for the team to strengthen coordination and plan for effective implementation across key areas, including:

🌱 Sustainable livelihoods and climate-resilient agriculture
💧 Water security and ecosystem protection
🌳 Nature-based Solutions for environmental restoration
🛡️ Disaster risk reduction and climate resilience
🤝 Inclusive community engagement and accountability

With a shared vision and strong teamwork, the RIVERS programme is moving forward to support sustainable development, strengthen community resilience, and protect the natural resources that communities depend on.

Together, let’s build resilient communities and a sustainable future!

💧🌱 Strengthening Climate Resilience and Water Security in Viqueque

On 30 September 2026, His Majesty’s Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Dominic Jermey, and his team visited ADRA Timor-Leste project sites in Ossu de Cima, Loihunu and Uma Uain Craic, Viqueque, to see the impact of the ICARVE and REVIVE projects, supported by FCDO through CARA, and learn about the ongoing THRIVE project.

In Ossu de Cima, the delegation visited the Uairiu spring protection initiative, which includes two water tanks and four tapstands, helping improve access to water while protecting an important community water source.

In Loihunu, the team observed activities including spring protection, tree planting and improved community water systems, demonstrating how environmental restoration and water security can help communities respond to climate-related challenges.

At Uma Uain Craic, the team visited a community water system with 20 tapstands benefiting approximately 270 households, supported by two water tanks that also serve the local church. They also spoke with community members about their experiences before and after the improvements.

To support long-term sustainability, Group Management Facilities (GMFs) have been established to support the management, maintenance and repair of the water systems. Households contribute US$1 per month to help keep the facilities functional.

These initiatives demonstrate how community-led solutions can strengthen water security, restore the environment and build climate resilience in Viqueque.

🌱 From Community Voices to Climate Action

What has changed for communities in Viqueque?

During her visit, Mana Nafysa, CARA Program Manager, heard directly from community members about their experiences before and after the projects.

💧 Water that once required long walks can now be accessed closer to home.
🌿 Springs and land are being protected from erosion.
🤝 Communities are taking greater responsibility for maintaining their water systems.
🌱 Local ideas are shaping solutions for climate challenges.

Mana Nafysa also met with SMASA, Forestry, Agriculture, local leaders and project teams to understand the progress, challenges and opportunities for stronger collaboration.

Building on the work of ICARVE and REVIVE, ADRA Timor-Leste is now implementing THRIVE to continue supporting locally led climate adaptation in Viqueque.

The most important voices are those of the communities themselves. ❤️

Through the Climate Action for a Resilient Asia (CARA) Project, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and implemented by ADRA Timor-Leste in partnership with ADRA UK, communities are leading local solutions to build climate resilience.
