50th Golden Anniversary of Timor-Leste’s Proclamation of Independence
Marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and 50 years marking Timor-Leste’s Proclamation of Independence, on Wednesday, young women leaders came together with two courageous survivors of Timor-Leste’s past conflict, Maria Isabel Jesus da Silva and Josefa Adão da Silva, to revisit a place of memory and reflect on the journey of Timorese women, their struggles, resilience, and powerful contributions to building our nation.
The gathering took place at the former prison, now the Centro Nacional Chega (CNC) in Balide, a site that holds deep meaning for our history. In this moment of reflection, the young women, participants of the Nabilan program's Bin Alin Hakbiit Malu program, honored the meaning of freedom, how it is tied to the sacrifices of the past, and how it must continue to guide our fight against gender inequality today and into the future.
As mana Isabel reminded us: “Our nation has gained independence, but our people have not yet gained full liberation. Many of our sisters still carry the wounds of the past, still live in struggle, still face stigma from society. That is why it is vital that we all work together to end violence against women and girls.”
The day’s activities included a guided tour through the Chega Museum’s timeline of Timor-Leste’s history from 1975 to 1999, a powerful learning experience for the Bin Alin and a reminder of the importance of memory, justice, and solidarity in shaping our future.
Congratulations Timor-Leste! Long live the women of Timor-Leste, long live women around the world!
