Today, on World Food Day, the management team of Plan International Timor-Leste joined our agriculture group in harvesting trigu lokal (local wheat) in the Horaikik Maubesi Ainaro.

This was more than a harvest. It was an opportunity to engage with communities, learn from local farmers, and discuss ways to strengthen food security through increased horticulture production and greater food diversification.

We believe that sustainable food systems are built through community leadership, local knowledge, and collective action.

📍 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗵𝗶, 𝟭𝟰 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 - Agustina Sarmentu Soares, 16, a student at Francisco Xavier do Amaral Public General Secondary School (Turiscai Branch), from Manumera Village, Turiscai Administrative Post, Manufahi Municipality, had the opportunity to symbolically assume the role of 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗵𝗶 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 for two hours as part of the 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 initiative. 🇹🇱

🏛️ During the activity, Agustina gained firsthand insights into the 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 involved in municipal leadership. She also visited different departments within the Manufahi Municipal Authority to learn about their work and the responsibilities of public servants in serving local communities.

💬 Agustina expressed her happiness and sincere appreciation to the Manufahi Municipal Authority for providing her with this meaningful opportunity to experience a leadership position.

🗣️ “I am deeply grateful to the Manufahi Municipal Authority for giving me the opportunity to take on the role of President of the Municipal Authority for two hours. I am very happy to have gained a deeper understanding of the skills and responsibilities involved in decision-making,” Agustina shared.

💪 Agustina also delivered an important message to girls and young women, encouraging them to 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀.

🌸 She emphasised that initiatives such as Girls Takeover are essential for preparing the next generation of female leaders and demonstrating that 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗻 — 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼!

🤝 During her visits to the departments, Agustina encouraged officials and staff to continue carrying out their duties with 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆, particularly in serving the people of Manufahi.

💙 Through this experience, Agustina demonstrated that girls have the potential to learn, lead, express their ideas, and contribute to decision-making processes that are important for community development.

🌸 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 is a Plan International initiative that provides girls and young women with opportunities to symbolically step into leadership positions, learn directly from leaders, and raise their voices on issues affecting their lives and futures. In Timor-Leste, this initiative forms part of the celebration of 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

💙 Disasters and climate change can affect everyone, but 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 may face particular challenges during emergencies, including disruptions to education, limited access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare services, and increased risks to their safety and protection.

🤝 On this important day, 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗿-𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲 reaffirms its commitment to advancing the rights, protection and equality of children and young people, with a particular focus on girls. We remain dedicated to supporting communities in strengthening disaster preparedness, increasing risk awareness and building resilience to the impacts of climate change.

🌱 We believe that 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻, 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 should not only be protected but also have the right, voice and capacity to participate in decision-making and lead actions that reduce disaster risks in their communities.

📍 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲, 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗵𝗶, 𝟭𝟬 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 - Nericia da Silva Sarmentu Caldas Gomes, 16, from Letefoho, Same, Manufahi Municipality, and a student at Café Same Secondary School, had the opportunity to symbolically assume the role of 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗵𝗶 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗔𝗣𝗖) as part of the 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 initiative. 🇹🇱

🚒 During the takeover, Nericia had the opportunity to 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗣𝗖 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹, practise symbolically signing documents related to firefighting, emergency response, and recovery operations, and visit different departments to learn about their responsibilities and ongoing work.

🤝 Through her interactions with the APC Commander and personnel, Nericia gained valuable insights into the importance of 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 in serving communities. Discussions also covered climate change and the impacts of El Niño on communities in Timor-Leste.

💬 During her visits to the different departments, Nericia shared her observations, recognising the APC team's efforts while encouraging personnel to maintain discipline, continuously improve their services, and respond promptly to communities in need.

💙 Nericia expressed her sincere appreciation to Plan International Timor-Leste and the Manufahi Civil Protection Authority for providing her with this meaningful opportunity to learn firsthand about the roles and responsibilities of civil protection personnel. She described the experience of symbolically serving as Commander as a privilege that brought her great happiness and motivation.

👨‍🚒 The Commander of the Manufahi Civil Protection Authority also expressed his appreciation for Nericia's courage and confidence in taking on this leadership role. He emphasised that opportunities like this are essential to 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀.

👧 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼, 12, from Lequidoe Administrative Post, Aileu Municipality, symbolically assumed the role of 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗶 for one hour.

👧 𝗥𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, 16, from Fahiria Village, Aileu Municipality, symbolically stepped into the role of 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

🌏 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (𝗥-𝗠𝗨𝗡) is an interactive, hands-on learning programme designed to help young people develop skills in diplomacy, international relations, leadership, communication, and negotiation.

💻🤝 Through diplomatic simulations, participants have the opportunity to represent different countries, explore global challenges, exchange perspectives, and work together to develop shared solutions. The programme also focuses on 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to help build a safer, more inclusive digital environment.

💙 The participation of these three girls highlights the importance of creating opportunities for girls to learn, express their ideas, build confidence, and gain leadership experience from an early age.
