Desde o início, La’o Hamutuk, junto com o movimento e a sociedade civil nacional e internacional, alerta sobre os riscos da participação na Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMC, sigla em português) e reforça a sua posição contrária ao regulamento da OMC e à entrada de Timor-Leste nesta organização multilateral.
Infelizmente, membros do IX Governo e do Parlamento Nacional, além da Presidência da República, no dia 26 de fevereiro de 2024, continuam a sua ambição de forma urgente para assinar o protocolo de adesão na 13ª Reunião Ministerial da Organização Mundial do Comércio (WTO, sigla em inglês) em Abu Dhabi, EAU.
La’o Hamutuk rejeita a adesão de Timor-Leste à Organização Mundial do Comércio e sugere que o Estado foque em proteger e promover a sua economia interna. Desde o início da negociação para a adesão, nós alertamos sobre os riscos que a entrada na OMC pode trazer para a realidade da população de Timor-Leste, especialmente a dos agricultores.
Ainda que a OMC afirme que o mercado livre é uma forma de desenvolver o país, e o Governo de Timor-Leste que assegurará os pequenos e médios negócios nacionais, a realidade e os desafios atuais da OMC demonstram que as regulamentações favorecem apenas algumas nações. O comércio livre mostra-se benéfico apenas para grandes nações e empresas que, ao longo do tempo, regulamentam e dominam o comércio e os investimentos globais. Nações e os seus pequenos e médios produtores, que ainda não possuem condições econômicas adequadas e avançadas, não podem competir e não obtêm benefícios deste mercado global, sendo mais prejudicadas pelas implicações no mercado livre, como mostram os protestos ocorrendo agora pelos agricultores da Índia e dos países europeus. Since the beginning, La'o Hamutuk, alongside with the movement and national and international civil society, has warned about the risks of participating in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and reinforced its position against WTO’s regulations and Timor-Leste's entrance into this multilateral organization.
Unfortunately, members of the IX Government and the National Parliament, in addition to the Presidency of the Republic, on February 26, 2024, continue their ambition in a urgently way to sign the accession protocol at the 13th Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO, acronym in English) in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
La’o Hamutuk rejects Timor-Leste’s accession to the World Trade Organization and suggests that the State focus on protecting and promoting its internal economy. Since the beginning of accession negotiations, we have warned about the risks that joining the WTO could bring to the reality of the population of Timor-Leste, especially farmers.
Even though the WTO states that the free market is a form to develop the country, and the Government of Timor-Leste affirms that it will protect small and medium-sized national businesses, the reality and current challenges of the WTO demonstrate that regulations only favor some nations. The free trade is beneficial only to large nations and companies that, over time, regulate and dominate global trade and investment. Nations and their small and medium producers, which do not yet have adequate and advanced economic conditions, cannot compete and do not obtain benefits from this global market, being more harmed by the implications on the free market, as shown by the protests taking place now by farmers in India and in some of the European countries.
