Yesterday marked farewell day at WaterAid Timor-Leste's office!

WaterAid Timor-Leste team sincerely thank Maun Alves as the Liquiçá Technical Coordinator who has contributed a lot during his 14 years of dedicated service at WaterAid Timor-Leste. For 14 years, Maun Alves's contribution provided clean water to rural communities and healthcare facilities in Liquiçá Municipality, we are truly grateful for his commitment and support over the years. We also thank Maun Carlos for his valuable support during his 3-month time with WaterAid Timor-Leste, supporting the team while mana Jesuina was on maternity leave.

📝WaterAid Timor-Leste, through the HARIS Project, conducted a 3-day training on WASH, Climate Change, GEDSI, and Water Resource Management through Nature-based Solutions in Ermera Municipality from 2-4 September 2026, supported by the Australian NGO Cooperation Program ( ). The training was delivered with the support of the Municipal Authority and directly engaged village chiefs, representatives from the municipal government and relevant technical departments, including SMASA, MAFP, the Environment Department, SEI focal point, and civil society organisations, including RHTO, UNAER, TILOFE, and women’s associations, as well as implementing partners HDI and GFFTL.

🪴The training combined practical knowledge on climate change and its impacts on water resources, land, and community livelihoods with sessions on climate change, water security, GEDSI, and water resource management. Participants were introduced to practical Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and their implementation, including retention ponds, check dams, (terracing/SALT).

In the opening remarks, the Secretary of Ermera Municipal Authority for Financing Affairs emphasised the importance of protecting and restoring these vital water sources, stating: “𝙒𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙮 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.”

These concerns closely connect with the focus of the training, which explored the impacts of climate change. Through continued learning and collaboration, the HARIS Project supports local actors to strengthen climate resilience and promote inclusive, sustainable, and community-centred WASH solutions in Ermera Municipality.🌾💧

Through the HARIS (Haforsa Adaptasaun Klimátika ne’ebé Reziliente, Inkluzivu no Sustentável) Project, WaterAid Timor-Leste worked with partners including HADEER and GFFTL, local authorities, and communities in 𝗕𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗼 and 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀, in 𝗕𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗼 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, through the Community Action Planning 2 (CAP 2) process to identify climate and disaster risks, map water resources, and develop local actions for climate resilience.

The CAP 2 activity supported communities to:
✅ Identify areas exposed to risks such as landslides and erosion.
✅ Map and protect important water resources.
✅ Identify Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and locally appropriate actions.
✅ Strengthen collaboration and community ownership in water resource management.

Through this process, communities play an active role in identifying risks and developing solutions that can strengthen water security and climate resilience. The activity was held from 3-14 August and supported by Australian NGO Cooperation Program ( ). 🌿💧

The 3-day training focused on gender equality, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), climate change, water security, and the water cycle, while also providing an opportunity for implementing partners to share experiences and strengthen their understanding of how to apply the Gender Module and facilitate meaningful dialogue on gender equality within communities.💧🌿

The activity continued on 6 & 7 August, visit the communities and implementing the knowledge and skills gained from the training into practice through direct community engagement in Railaco Craic Village and Manusae Village in Ermera Municipality. 🌱👥

𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗶, 𝟮𝟰 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 - WaterAid Timor-Leste officially launched the Kiwa PRESERVE Project at Novo Turismo, marking an important milestone in strengthening climate resilience through nature-based solutions (NbS) and sustainable water resource management in Timor-Leste.🌱✨

Led by WaterAid Australia in partnership with Live & Learn and Permatil Global, the Kiwa PRESERVE Project is being implemented across Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Timor-Leste. In Timor-Leste, the project will work with communities in Daisua, Rotutu, Grotu, and Betanu villages in Manufahi Municipality to strengthen water security, restore ecosystems, and enhance community resilience to the impacts of climate change through nature-based solutions.🌾☀️
