🌊 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 | 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐗𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 🇨🇳

SOA Timor-Leste was officially invited by China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development to participate in the Blue Wave Conference 2026: Youth Leaders and Unknown Frontiers, co-hosted by ECOP.

Bringing together over 300 participants from 35 countries, the conference empowers young ocean leaders to explore ocean science, the blue economy, ocean literacy, and sustainable ocean action in support of SDG 14: Life Below Water.

During the conference, SOA Timor-Leste proudly presented its Waves of Impact initiative, highlighting our contribution to advancing Ocean Literacy, empowering youth, and strengthening community engagement in ocean conservation.

We are excited to be invited and featured on National TV following the successful conclusion of the Ocean Heroes Bootcamp last week.

Over three inspiring days, young ocean advocates came together to learn, collaborate, and strengthen their commitment to ocean conservation. As communication and public awareness are essential for driving positive change, sharing these important messages with a wider audience is a crucial part of our mission.

Our Project Manager and two Ocean Heroes Bootcamp delegates were invited to discuss ocean conservation, youth leadership, and the impact of the Ocean Heroes Bootcamp program. The discussion highlighted the importance of empowering young people to become champions for a healthier and more sustainable ocean.

We are grateful for this opportunity to amplify the voices of youth and raise awareness about the urgent need to protect our marine ecosystems.

SOA Timor-Leste, with support from Plan International Timor-Leste, successfully organized the Ocean Heroes Bootcamp 2026 from 22–24 May 2026 with 31 young delegates high schools and university students from across Timor-Leste.

The Pre-Bootcamp concluded with an inspiring day of mangrove planting, a mangrove study tour, and a sea turtle site visit. Following the learning sessions, participants had the opportunity to gain hands-on field experience and engage in interactive discussions on coastal and marine conservation.

This activity aimed to connect knowledge with real action, allowing participants to explore conservation efforts directly in the field while learning from local initiatives and communities. Together, participants successfully planted 𝟔𝟔𝟒 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, contributing to the restoration of approximately 𝟑𝟕𝟓 𝐦² (𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬) of coastal area in Hera. 🌱

A special thank you to Konservasaun FLORA & FAUNA and Timor-Leste Ocean Art for the meaningful sharing sessions and collaboration throughout the activity. Together, we continue building awareness and collective action for ocean and environmental conservation. 🌏💚

The final session of the Ocean Heroes Bootcamp Pre-Workshop brought participants into an inspiring and interactive learning journey on ocean conservation. Participants explored the importance of interconnected coastal ecosystems - Coral Reefs, Seagrass, and Mangroves, and how these ecosystems support marine biodiversity and sustain community livelihoods.

Beyond learning about ecosystems, participants also joined an engaging 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 - 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐭𝐡, where they openly shared their thoughts and feelings about the current situation, the challenges faced by coastal communities, and explored possible solutions together.

The session became even more dynamic through 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞-𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 that encouraged participants to think critically, collaborate, and build confidence as future Ocean Heroes.

After three weeks of workshop sessions on Ocean Conservation and Climate Change, we are excited to share that the next activity will take place tomorrow.
This “From Session to Hands-on Experience” field trip will bring participants to a mangrove site and a Community Conservation Center for Turtle Museum, where they can explore and gain direct, practical experience in conservation activities.
