Last week, Blue Ventures Timor-Leste joined the Asia Partners Forum (APF) 2026 in Bali. The forum brought together 43 partner organisations from Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside government representatives and regional stakeholders.

The event was officially opened by our Country Director and Acting Regional Director Asia-Pacific, Bernardete da Fonseca. Our Senior Programme Officer, Joãozinho Dedy Martins, also attended the forum.

During the sessions, our Senior Fisheries and Livelihoods Manager, Natercial Verdial, presented updates from Timor-Leste’s savings and loan groups. The presentation highlighted achievements under our Financial Inclusion and Food Security pillars.

APF 2026 created space for honest exchange and collaborative learning between partners working across different coastal contexts. We were especially excited to connect with partners from Indonesia and the Philippines as we continue strengthening partnership-driven approaches in Timor-Leste.

The forum reflected a growing regional commitment to community-led marine management, food security, and stronger collaboration across Asia-Pacific coastal communities. We are proud to be part of this important milestone.

Between September and October 2025, Blue Ventures and partners conducted a landmark ecological survey across Atáuro Island and Manatuto. The survey focused on three vital ecosystems:
🌱 Seagrasses: Essential nurseries for juvenile fish.
🌳 Mangroves: Critical for climate stability and carbon storage.
🪸 Coral Reefs: Sustaining local food security.

The data confirms that traditional management (Tara Bandu) is working, with protected areas holding over 1,300kg of fish biomass per hectare. A huge thank you to the community members and partners, Coral Triangle Center and Ministério da Agricultura Pecuâria Pescas E Florestas who made this evidence-based conservation possible!

We’re Hiring: Communications and Advocacy Officer

Blue Ventures is looking for a passionate and creative Communications and Advocacy Officer to join our team in Timor-Leste.

In this role, you will work closely with the Country Director, Regional Senior Communications Officer, and global colleagues to capture and share stories from the field. This includes producing photo stories, videos, blogs, and social media content, while supporting advocacy that highlights the voices and experiences of coastal communities.

Location: Dili, Timor-Leste
Application deadline: 23 March 2026
Contract duration: 2 years
Start date: As soon as possible

In commemorating the 10th anniversary of Blue Ventures Timor-Leste, we hosted the OCEAN Talkshow at Fundação Oriente, Dili, featuring H.E. Ambassador Adão Soares Barbosa (Chair of the LDC Group on Climate Change), Courtney Cox (Blue Ventures), Mr. Mateus Salvador (UNITAL), and Emanuel Rosario N. Brito (Lenuk Tasi) on February 11, 2026.

The discussion focused on how resilient coastal communities are central to sustainable marine conservation. Despite increasing pressure from human activities and climate change, panelists agreed that communities can manage their marine resources when they have the right information.

That means access to reliable data. Not just collected, but understood, owned, and used by communities to guide decisions. With support from government, academia, and organisations like BVTL, data helps communities form decision, apply tara bandu, and manage fisheries based on evidence.

Speakers also stressed that protecting reefs, mangroves, and spawning areas directly supports fish stocks and livelihoods. When science works alongside local knowledge, awareness grows and youth become active stewards of their seas. Collaboration and communication then turn information into collective action.
