KSTL Holds First National Congress for Informal Economy Workers in Timor-Leste.
Dili, Luz Clarita, May 25-26, 2026, KSTL held a two-day national congress for workers in the informal economy with the theme “Social Justice and Economic Justice for Workers in the Informal Economy.”
A total of 133 congress delegates came from 33 groups established in the municipalities of Aileu, Ermera, Liquiça, and Dili. The workers participating in the congress came from various business sectors, including street vendors, coconut sellers, chicken sellers, kiosk owners, rice and bean sellers, farmers, vegetable sellers, drivers, and market vendors.
The purpose of this congress was to establish the Informal Economy Workers Association, which will serve as a platform for workers in the informal economy, including electing the association’s executive structure, discussing its statutes (vision, mission, and goals), and discussing the association’s strategy and other programs for the future.
The role of informal sector workers in supporting the national economy becomes increasingly important when there is an organizational framework that has the capacity to fight for workers’ rights and interests, as well as increase solidarity among workers in the informal economy sector to contribute to the country’s economic development.
