Hyenas in Tajikistan? 🤔 Yes - but they are on the edge.

Not everyone knows that the striped hyena exists beyond Africa, with fragmented populations across Asia and the Middle East, and Tajikistan is one of its range states.

Today, only a few individuals are believed to remain in the country.

Often misunderstood, hyenas play a critical role in ecosystems - cleaning the environment, reducing disease risks, and maintaining natural balance.

🌍 On International Hyena Day, celebrated on April 27, all hyena species are recognized, including the striped hyena, highlighting their importance and the urgent need for their conservation.

Since 2025, with technical support from and international partners such as , the Government of Tajikistan has led important efforts to strengthen the international protection of the species through proposals under CITES and CMS, as well as by organizing side events during the CoPs to raise awareness and encourage wider conservation action.

Today, the striped hyena is listed in Appendix II of CITES and Appendices I and II of CMS.

At the same time, TNF is contributing to the conservation of this species through awareness raising, habitat conservation and restoration, and strengthening understanding of human–wildlife interactions.

Much has been done - but it is not enough.

Only through collaboration we can ensure the survival of this rare and important species.

📅 April 25, 2026 — World Veterinary Day

🔊🦠 On this important day, we mark the opening of the Department of Virology and Research on Wildlife Diseases at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan — a critical step for strengthening wildlife health research in the country.

🌿 This milestone highlights the importance of the One Health approach — recognizing that the health of people, animals, and ecosystems is closely interconnected.

✔️ Advancing research on wildlife diseases
✔️ Improving understanding of disease risks in wild animals
✔️ Strengthening zoonotic disease monitoring and early warning systems
✔️ Supporting wildlife health, conservation, and biodiversity protection
✔️ Building stronger links between veterinary science and nature conservation

🌍 Strengthening wildlife health research today means building a safer, healthier future for people, animals, and ecosystems.

🐾 Happy World Veterinary Day!

At TNF, Earth Day is not just one day — it is our everyday commitment. 🌍

This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” reminds us that real change happens when people act together. This is why approaches like One Health are essential — as one example of how acting together can create a safer, healthier Earth for people, animals, and ecosystems alike.

💚 This Earth Day, and every day, we remind ourselves:
• Protect habitats, protect life
• Reduce waste and choose sustainably
• Respect wildlife and natural spaces
• Support local communities and conservation efforts
• Speak up and raise awareness

Real change is built through simple, consistent actions.

Protecting nature means protecting ourselves.

Every ecosystem we conserve strengthens the connection between people, wildlife, and the planet — ensuring a healthier future for all.

A greener future is not something we wait for — it is something we create, every single day. 🌱

Everything in nature is connected 🌿🐾

This World Wildlife Day 2026, under the theme “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods,” we celebrate a simple truth: protecting wildlife means protecting whole landscapes and the balance that keeps nature alive — from iconic wild animals to the medicinal and aromatic plants that people have relied on for generations. 💚

Protect wildlife. Protect habitats. Protect the balance that keeps nature alive.

🌿💧 World Wetlands Day | 2 February

Wetlands don’t just look beautiful, they store water, soften floods, filter pollution, and keep wildlife thriving. 💧🌿

This year’s theme is “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage”, a reminder that local wisdom and nature belong together.

🏞 Here in Beshai Palangon (Tigrovaya Balka) State Nature Reserve, rivers and floodplains shape a living mosaic of tugai forests, reedbeds, canals, and floodplain lakes. These wetlands are a real “life zone”: home to fish, frogs, and other freshwater life, and a vital food source for waterbirds. And yes, waterbirds and wetlands depend on each other. No healthy wetlands leads to no resting, feeding, and wintering sites. 🐦🌾

✅ TNF is monitoring through waterbird censuses across 6 lakes, helping track trends, spot risks early, and plan stronger protection.
🤝 Local knowledge leads the way: together with rangers and nearby communities, TNF is planning wetland clean-ups in priority canal areas - clearing debris and overgrowth, based on community request and careful assessment.

💚 Protect and save what protects and keeps life.
If wetlands disappear, we lose birds, clean water, and the balance they keep.

2025 ends with progress ✅ — 2026 needs continued action for the Striped hyaena 🐾

At CITES CoP20 in Samarkand (27 Nov 2025), we joined partners to spotlight the Striped hyaena (Hyaena hyaena) — a vital “sanitary worker” for ecosystems and human health.

During the side event: Striped Hyaena at Risk (hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan & Uzbekistan + NABU, Germany) key threats were discussed: habitat loss, conflict/persecution, illegal trade/body parts, and hyaenas kept as pets.

Panel & discussion 🎤 (moderated by Ms. Lyla Amini, TNF)
With NABU, WCS, Conservation X Labs, Global Initiative on Illegal and Unsustainable Taking of Species, Lebanese University, and TNF.
Speakers: Katja Karpisch (NABU), Dr. Susan Lieberman (WCS), Tanya Rosen (Conservation X Labs), Dr. Mounir Abi-Said (Lebanese University), Mirzonazar Mirzoev (TNF).

✅ CoP20 outcome (29 Nov 2025): Appendix I didn’t pass, but a compromise was adopted by consensus — Striped hyaena moved from Appendix III → Appendix II.

🐾 Drop a paw if you support stronger protection for the Striped hyaena!

After a long and committed journey, the Striped hyaena (Hyaena hyaena) has been uplisted under CITES from Appendix III to Appendix II. 🐾

For the Republic of Tajikistan, this is a historic step – it was the country’s first-ever proposal to amend the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

As a public organization, the Tajikistan Nature Foundation (TNF) supported this process together with the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), Germany, assisting the Committee of Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in the preparation and development of the proposal.

All range States supported the uplisting from Appendix III to Appendix II, and many non-range States also spoke in favour of the motion of amendment, recognising the threats facing the Striped hyaena and the need for stronger international control of trade.

We are deeply grateful to the dedicated NGOs and experts whose efforts helped make this possible, including:

Tajikistan Nature Foundation (TNF)
Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), Germany
ZGAP
Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)
IUCN Hyaena Specialist Group
Conservation X Labs and the Global Initiative on Illegal and Unsustainable Taking of Species
Lebanese University and Animal Encounter

…along with many other partners and colleagues who contributed their time, expertise, and advocacy.

This decision is not the final destination, but the beginning of a new phase of long-term collaboration. Together with CITES Parties, NGOs, researchers, and local communities, we will work to ensure that this new listing leads to real change on the ground – reducing illegal and unsustainable trade, addressing persecution driven by superstition, protecting habitats, and giving Striped hyaenas a safer future across their range.

Thank you to everyone who stood behind the Striped hyaena. This is our shared achievement – and our shared responsibility going forward.
