Alumni Success Story: Munira Akilova

Munira Akilova, founder of the MUNIR brand, is a specialist and trainer in handicrafts and tourism, with a strong focus on women’s entrepreneurship and rural development in Tajikistan. She is an alumna of the Leadership Program, the Johns Hopkins Fellows Program for Digital Media Entrepreneurship (JFDP), and the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Through these U.S.-funded exchange programs, Munira strengthened her leadership skills, expanded her understanding of entrepreneurship ecosystems, and gained practical approaches to supporting small businesses and artisans.

Building on the knowledge and experience gained in the United States, Munira has led extensive consultancy work on socio-economic development projects in rural areas, focusing on value chains and women’s entrepreneurship. She has collaborated with international organizations such as USAID, GIZ, Aga Khan Foundation, EBRD, UNDP, and UNESCO, applying global best practices to local contexts.

Drawing directly on her exchange experience, Munira has trained more than 500 artisans and mentored entrepreneurs across Central Asia, helping them build sustainable livelihoods and scale their businesses.

Her contributions have been widely recognized—she was named among the Top 100 Successful Entrepreneurs of Tajikistan in 2021 and received additional awards from financial institutions in 2024 and 2025.

💬 “My experience in the United States showed me how to connect tradition with innovation. It inspired me to support women and artisans in building sustainable businesses and reaching new markets.”

Munira’s journey demonstrates how U.S. exchange programs empower alumni to translate knowledge into impactful, community-driven solutions.
