การกลับมาของพะยูนฝูงใหญ่ คือสิ่งบ่งชี้การฟื้นตัวทะเลสตูล 🐋🌱
ถือเป็นเรื่องตื่นเต้นในรอบหลายสิบปี ของชุมชนประมงพื้นบ้านบนเกาะกลางทะเลสตูล 3 หมู่บ้าน คือ บ้านตันหยงอุมา บ้านบากันใหญ่ บ้านตันหยงกลิง ที่ตั้งอยู่ในตำบลเกาะสาหร่าย อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสตูล เมื่อทราบข่าวว่ามีพะยูนฝูงใหญ่ถึง 11 ตัว เข้ามาอาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณรอบเกาะแห่งนี้อีกครั้ง
เกาะสาหร่าย เป็นตำบลที่อยู่เกือบใต้สุดของชายฝั่งอันดามัน มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 6.2 ตารางกิโลเมตร (หรือประมาณ 3,875 ไร่) มีประชากรโดยรวมกว่า 300 ครอบครัว ทะลแห่งนี้เคยเป็นแหล่งหญ้าทะเลผืนใหญ่ ที่มีอยู่เพียงไม่กี่สายพันธุ์ เช่น ใบมะกรูด หญ้าคา และยังมีปะการังน้ำตื่นที่หาดูได้เพียงไม่กี่แห่งในทะเลสตูล ที่นี่จึงมีแรงจูงใจให้สัตว์น้ำหายากทั้งโลมาและพะยูน เข้ามาอยู่อาศัยตลอดเวลา แต่ต้องยอมรับว่าในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมานี้ พะยูนมีเข้ามาน้อยมาก หรือแทบจะหมดหายไปก็ว่าได้
หลังเหตุการณ์สึนามิเมื่อปี 2547 จนมาถึงวิกฤติของทะเลตรัง ที่ทำให้หญ้าทะเลถูกทำลายและตายไปจำนวนมาก ได้ส่งผลมาถึงทะเลสตูลด้วยเช่นกัน ส่งผลให้พะยูนจำนวนมากที่มีอยู่ในทะเลตรังรวมมาถึงสตูลต้องอพยบย้านถิ่นที่อยู่อาศัยขึ้นไปทางอันดามันตอนบนจำนวนหลายฝูง
ข่าวดีเมื่อต้นปี 2569 เกิดขึ้นเมื่อมีหน่วยงานด้านการอนุรักษ์ทำการสำรวจทะเลสตูล และได้พบกับฝูงพะยูนในพื้นที่บริเวณนี้ถึง 11 ตัว จึงไม่แปลกที่ยังความตื่นเต้นกับคนในพื้นที่ ชาวประมงพื้นบ้าน และคนทั่วไปในจังหวัดสตูล ที่ความพยายามจะฟื้นฟูแหล่งหญ้าทะเลให้กลับคืนในช่วง 1-2 ปีที่ผ่านมานี้ แม้จะพิสูจน์ชัดไม่ได้ว่า เหตุที่ทำให้พะยูนกลับมาในครั้งนี้เกิดขึ้นเพราะอะไร แต่ก็อดอิ่มเอมใจไม่ได้ในหมู่ชาวบ้านและกลุ่มอนุรักษ์ที่พยายามทำให้หญ้าทะเลกลับคืนมาในทะเลสตูล
สิ่งที่ท้าทายหลังจากนี้ สำหรับคนสตูลและหน่วยงานที่รับผิดชอบด้านการอนุรักษ์ทะเล คือ ต้องทำอะไรและจะต้องไม่ทำอะไรบ้าง ที่จะยังให้พะยูนพำนักอาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณรอบเกาะสาหร่าย และกระจายไปอยู่ในที่อื่นๆของทะเลสตูลได้อย่างยาวนานต่อไป คงต้องช่วยกันมากพอสมควรแน่ๆ ซึ่งไม่ใช่แค่ใครกลุ่มใดกลุ่มหนึ่งเท่านั้น แต่คงต้องร่วมมือกันในทุกภาคส่วน🫱🏻🫲🏽🌏🩵

A Large Herd of Dugongs Return: An Indicator of Satun's Marine Recovery 🐋🌱
The most exciting news in decades for the 3 traditional fishing communities in the Satun Sea, ---Ban Tanyong Uma, Ban Bagan Yai, and Ban Tanyong Kling all located in Koh Sarai Subdistrict, Muang District, Satun Province---, when it was reported that a large herd of 11 dugongs had returned to inhabit surrounding the island once again.
Koh Sarai Subdistrict located near the southernmost tip of the Andaman coast, covering an area of approximately 6.2 square kilometers (about 3,875 rai) and home to over 300 families. Historically, this marine area boasted expansive seagrass beds, such as Halophila ovalis (Ho) and Enhalus acoroides (Ea), along with shallow-water coral reefs found in only a few spots within the Satun Sea. These rich resources naturally attracted rare marine life, including dolphins and dugongs, making it a constant habitat. However, over the past several years, dugong sightings had drastically declined, to the point where they had practically vanished.
Following the 2004 tsunami and extending to the recent crisis in the Trang Sea---which saw mass destruction and die-offs of seagrass---the Satun Sea was inevitably affected. Consequently, numerous dugong herds that previously inhabited the waters of Trang and Satun were forced to migrate north toward the upper Andaman Sea.
The good news arrived in early 2026 when a marine conservation agency surveyed the Satun Sea and discovered a herd of 11 dugongs in the area. Unsurprisingly, this discovery brought immense excitement to the locals, traditional fishermen, and the general public in Satun Province who efforts to restore the seagrass beds have been ongoing for the past 1–2 years. It certainly brings a profound sense of fulfillment and joy to the villagers and conservation groups, while it cannot be definitively proven that this restoration is the sole reason for the dugongs' return.
The upcoming challenge for the people of Satun and the marine conservation agencies is determining what must be done and what must be avoided to ensure these dugongs continue to reside around Koh Sarai and eventually spread to other parts of the Satun Sea for the long term. This will undeniably require substantial collective effort. It cannot rely on any single group; it will take genuine cooperation from all sectors.🫱🏻🫲🏽🌏🩵
