These dolphins are not ‘rescued’, in many cases they have been stolen from the wild in the cruelest method imaginable. In the fishing village of Taiji a daily slaughter occurs from September to February annually of dolphins that are migrating past this area in search of food. A total of 12 boats go out to sea daily to catch dolphins with ‘pretty’ ones, such as bottlenose species ‘saved’ and then t
ransported for training and sold on to dolphinariums for a substantial amount. The process is thus: Once a pod of dolphins is spotted the boats create a formation to begin the 'dolphin drive hunt’. The method is a highly effective way of locating, capturing and killing the dolphins, sometimes a hundred or more dolphins can lose their freedom this way in a single day. The hunters lower several steel poles into the water, one on each side of each boat. The poles are flared out at the bottom like a bell, which amplifies the sound produced when the hunters repeatedly hit the poles with hammers. The noise creates a wall of sound underwater, and as dolphins are primarily sonic oriented beings they abruptly find themselves surrounded between this wall of sound and the shoreline. The dolphins then are driven towards Taiji harbour, and the infamous Killing Cove. The dolphins are stressed, tired and in fear of their lives. They are then driven closer in to the Cove. Once netted off, the sound of dolphins crying, screaming and hurling themselves up to the rocks to escape is bloodcurdling. The fishermen have no mercy and no respect for the pain and fear endured by the dolphins and most are then murdered in front of family members. ชาวภูเก็ตได้รับรู้ถึงแผนการเปิดธุรกิจโชว์โลมาเมื่อปี 2557 ที่ผ่านมา จากการร้องเรียนขององค์กรที่มุ่งเน้นเรื่องสิทธิของสัตว์องค์กรหนึ่ง
เนื่องจากทางผู้ประกอบการไม่เคยได้การทำการประชาพิจารณ์แต่อย่างใด
และถึงแม้จะมีการคัดค้านอย่างรุนแรงจากชาวชุมชนและประชาชนทั่วไป ก็ยังดูเหมือนกับว่าธุรกิจโชว์โลมาแห่งนี้ยังอาจจะมีโอกาสเปิดกิจการในเร็ววันอยู่ดี ทั้งๆที่สถานที่นั้นมีสระน้ำขนาดที่เล็กอย่างให้อภัยไม่ได้ อีกทั้งยังไม่ได้มาตรฐานสากลอีกด้วย
วิธีการ “จัดหา” โลมาเพื่อธุรกิจรูปแบบนี้ช่างเป็นวิธีที่แสนทารุณนัก เพราะมันไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นจากการช่วยชีวิตโลมา หรือแม้แต่จากการผสมพันธุ์ แต่เป็นการจับมาจากท้องทะเลด้วยขั้นตอนที่โหดร้ายและเลือดเย็นที่สุด
ที่หมู่บ้าน Taiji ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ชาวประมงจะทำการจับและฆ่าโลมาที่ว่ายผ่านน่านน้ำนี้ในขณะย้ายถิ่นตามฤดูกาล ตั้งแต่เดือนกันยายนถึงเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ของทุกปี มีเรือกว่า 12 ลำออกไปกลางทะเลทุกวันเพื่อไล่ต้อนฝูงโลมาเข้าฝั่ง และคัดเลือกตัวที่ “สวยงาม” อย่างเช่นโลมาปากขวด (Bottlenose dolphins) และ “ช่วยชีวิต” โลมากลุ่มนั้นโดยการส่งไปยังสถานที่ฝึกอบรม แล้วจึงส่งต่อไปให้ธุรกิจโชว์โลมารอบโลก ส่วนสิ่งตอบแทนสำหรับชาวประมงนั้นคือเงินจำนวนมหาศาล
ความเป็นจริงอันน่าเศร้าของขั้นตอนการจับโลมาก็คือ การใช้เรือหลายๆลำสร้างแนวเขตเพื่อต้อนฝูงโลมาเข้าฝั่ง เรือทุกลำจะหย่อนเสาเหล็กจากหัวเรือและท้ายเรือลงไปใต้น้ำพร้อมกับกางปลายเสาทั้งสองออกให้เป็นเหมือนโทรโข่ง หลังจากนั้นก็เคาะเสาดังๆพร้อมกันทุกลำ ทำให้เกิดกำแพงเสียงซึ่งกั้นไม่ให้ฝูงโลมากล้าว่ายออกไป เพราะโลมาติดต่อกันด้วยคลื่นเสียง และสามารถรับคลื่นเสียงใต้น้ำได้เป็นอย่างดี วิธีการนี้จึงทำให้ฝูงโลมาสับสน และถูกต้อนเข้าฝั่งอย่างง่ายดาย
ชาวประมงจะต้อนฝูงโลมาเข้าไปในอ่าวเล็กๆทีชื่อเสียงกระฉ่อนไปไกล นั่นก็คือ The Cove หรืออ่าวมรณะ นั่นเอง ในเวลานี้ฝูงโลมาอยู่ในสภาพหวาดกลัวและสับสน และต่างกรีดร้องโหยหวน เพราะชาวประมงได้ขึงตาข่ายปิดอ่าวเพื่อขังพวกเค้าไว้ หลายตัวพยายามหนีเอาชีวิตรอดโดยการโถมตัวเองขึ้นไปบนโขดหินริมฝั่ง ถึงแม้ว่าจะเป็นการพยายามที่ทำให้ตัวเองบาดเจ็บก็ตาม และเพื่อปิดงาน ชาวประมงจะทำการเลือกและแยกโลมาที่สวยงามออกมา และทำการฆ่าตัวที่เหลืออย่างอำมหิตและเลือดเย็น
