His Majesty the King has graciously appointed a Royal Representative to present awards to the winners of the 43rd Long-Distance Sailing Competition, the Gulf Crossing Race for the Royal Trophy “Vega” Rudder, and the Thailand National Sailing Championships 2026.
On 19 April 2026 at 17:00, His Majesty the King graciously appointed Admiral Pongthep Nuthep, Privy Councillor, as His Royal Representative to present awards to the winners of the 43rd Long-Distance Sailing Competition, the Gulf Crossing Race for the Royal Trophy “Vega” Rudder, and the Thailand National Sailing Championships 2026. The ceremony took place at Had Lek Hall, Multi-Purpose Building, Royal Thai Marine Corps Headquarters, Sattahip District, Chonburi Province.
The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Navy, the Sports Authority of Thailand, the National Sports Development Fund, and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited, organized these events. The competitions are held to commemorate the sailing excellence of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, who single-handedly sailed across the Gulf of Thailand on 19 April 1966, from Klai Kangwon Palace in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, to Toei Ngam Beach, Naval Base, Sattahip, Chonburi Province.
They also honor His Majesty’s ingenuity in boat building and his royal guidance on sailing, which inspired the well-known phrase: “Thai children who can sail can live well.” The events further uphold the royal initiative of His Majesty the King to “continue, preserve, and build upon” these legacies. Sailing is a sport of great interest to both His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen, who has participated in several sailing competitions, serving as an important inspiration for promoting sailing in Thailand. The competitions also support sailors in developing their skills and advancing the sport nationally.
The events included:
The Gulf crossing race from Cha-am (Phetchaburi Province) to Sattahip (Chonburi Province), a distance of 45 nautical miles
Long-distance races of 14 and 7 nautical miles within the Sattahip area
A total of 121 boats and 182 sailors participated.
The Thailand National Sailing Championships 2026 featured 137 boats and 158 sailors, including participants from China, France, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Taiwan, India, and Singapore. The oldest competitor was Rear Admiral Sunan Montatphalin, aged 92, competing in the OK class.
