Help for disabled goes online

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry has joined hands with the Public Health Ministry to launch a digital one-stop-service platform for disabled person ID cards and disability grant applications.

The launching ceremony for the platform was held yesterday at Centara Life Government Complex Hotel & Convention Centre on Chaeng Watthana Road in Lak Si district.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Varawut Silpa-archa told the event about the government's policy to improve disabled people's lives, including details on the one-stop service platform, which will add to convenience and cut costs.

He said the platform was created as part of a project to provide the disabled with better access to welfare.

Mr Varawut said the online project is divided into two stages.

He said the objective of the first stage is to allow quick registration for disabled people through the platform which electronically assesses and confirms people's disability.

The platform is linked with the system for making applications for disabled person ID cards.

The second stage involves linking the system with another system for submitting requests for disability grants.

The platform is aimed at allowing the disabled to register as a disabled person with convenience without having to visit the Social Development and Human Security Ministry's provincial offices.

It will also eliminate the need for them to visit a hospital to receive a disability assessment, which will reduce travel costs for them.

The Public Health Ministry has prepared 40 hospitals nationwide for participation in the project's pilot stage.

Mr Varawut said his ministry values all groups of people amid what he described as situations involving social inequality and demographic changes.

He also outlined his ministry's "5x5" policy for dealing with the ongoing population crisis with its five strategies, which include one aimed at creating opportunities and value for people with disability.

The one-stop service for the disabled is part of the 5x5 policy, he said.

One of the basic necessities everyone needs is housing or shelter. The quality and type of housing vary from person to person. Some may have all the amenities, while others may only have a roof to protect them from the elements.

Originally, Uncle Sompan lived in a rental house with a roof, walls, and a bathroom. It was a small, affordable rental room that was sufficient for living. However, due to some changes, he had to move to a nearby storage room, which does not incur any rent but lacks basic amenities such as walls and a bathroom.

In his new room, he has access to electricity, a wooden table, a rice cooker, and a small fan. Due to his limitations in living a normal life, he is unable to work. His only income consists of 700 baht from elderly support and 800 baht from disability support, totaling 1,500 baht. This amount is insufficient to provide for even the most basic amenities.
