One minute after our divorce, my ex-husband proudly took his pregnant mistress shopping for a $1.5 million diamond, sneering, “My wife is finally out of the way.” But when he pulled out his black card, the manager suddenly stopped him
Share Chapter 1: The Million-Dollar Illusion The ink on the court documents still felt almost fresh from the printer, yet even the sharp Los Angeles wind couldn’t cool the fire burning through my veins. I stood on the pavement, clutching the papers that had legally ended my three-year nightmare of a marriage to Jason Miller.
For nearly a thousand days, I had played the role of the loyal, quiet wife, making myself smaller and smaller to protect his fragile ego. Today, that performance was finally over. For the first time in years, I took a breath that genuinely felt like my own. I was about to walk toward the parking structure when a harsh.
Painfully familiar laugh sliced through the noise of the city around me. It drifted from the grand entrance of Neiman Marcus, the centerpiece of the nearby luxury promenade. I didn’t even need to turn around. I knew that forced, ingratiating laugh anywhere. Jason. And beside him, leaning into his side, was Lily Foster.
Her voice carrying the sugary entitlement I had come to despise. Against my better judgment, I stopped. A wave of brutal clarity passed through me as I watched them through the spotless glass doors. Jason was wearing the custom charcoal Tom Ford suit I had bought him for his birthday the year before.
One arm rested possessively around Lily’s waist. She was squeezed into a bubblegum-pink designer dress that barely accommodated her slightly rounded stomach, one hand placed over it in a theatrical display of impending motherhood. Together, they moved directly into the high-end jewelry boutique on the ground floor—a place where even.
The smallest pieces carried prices large enough to make most people reconsider their mortgage. I remembered pointing out that exact boutique to Jason months earlier, mentioning a delicate necklace displayed in the window. He had laughed at me and humiliated me on the sidewalk. “Do you think cash grows on trees, Sophia?
All you care about is bleeding me dry,” he had sneered. And yet here he was now, performing the role of a financial titan for his mistress. Drawn by a kind of grim curiosity, I stepped through the revolving doors and positioned myself behind a thick marble pillar near the entrance of the boutique.
The acoustics inside the store were designed to carry even low voices, giving me an almost perfect seat for the performance about to unfold. “Babe, look at these,” Jason’s voice dripped with an artificial, sugary bravado I had never received. “Pick whatever catches your eye. Your man is taking care of everything today.”
Lily giggled, deliberately pitching her voice higher. “Jason, you spoil me too much. But won’t it be far too expensive?” Even while saying it, one perfectly manicured finger was already tapping against the reinforced glass display. She was pointing straight at the centerpiece of the room. I followed her gaze.
