Everything begins in the water... 💧

But with anthropogenic pressures, that water is now changing.

🐟 Beings of the Water is born to remind us about what we can't see, and too nudge us that we cannot protect what we don't know about.

Beings of the Water connects science, art and Indigenous wisdom to showcase the fundamental role of fish in life, culture, and the balance of the Amazonian territories.

Developed in Colombia, Brazil and Peru, the project opens a dialogue between communities, researchers, artists and NGOs, inviting people to look at rivers ands their inhabitants as sources of life, culture, heritage and future.

🤝 This is a project built on partnership.
✨ See the world from the water.

🌤️ Today we launch Beings of the Water: Amazonian fishes in the face of climate change, a collective initiative that connects science, art, and Indigenous knowledge to highlight the fundamental role of fishes as indicators of ecosystem change in the Amazon.

Migratory freshwater fish are in trouble: Will we act in time to save them?

💧 Migratory freshwater fish have declined by an estimated 81% since 1970 yet remain largely overlooked in global conservation policy. At the latest meeting of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), a new assessment identified 325 species worldwide in urgent need of coordinated protection.
💧 These long-distance swimmers underpin inland fisheries that feed hundreds of millions of people across the Amazon, Mekong, Congo and other river basins. By moving through river systems, they connect habitats, sustain food webs and support local economies.
💧 Dams, water extraction and habitat loss are rapidly severing migration routes, often cutting off access to spawning and feeding grounds. Scientists warn that without stronger protections, many migratory fish species — and the river systems they sustain — face an uncertain future.

SALOBRA, Brazil — Life revolves around water in this quiet fishing village in Brazil’s southern Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland. Here, a clear tributary meets the broader Miranda River, part of a vast floodplain where multiple streams spill across the landscape and wildlife thrives. Jagu...

For 30 years, the Disney Conservation Fund has supported organisations working with communities to protect wildlife, inspire action, and promote environmental resilience – including SHOAL, through our partners Re:wild, along with Wonders of the Mekong and Royal University of Agriculture, Cambodia!

With support from Disney, we have been able to launch a national hotline, deployed the Mekong Fish App, established a Cambodian rapid-response team, and linked those tools to provincial fisheries authorities and community outreach efforts. The support will help:

💧 establish protection and restoration of migration corridors,
💧 improve protection and management of Fish Conservation Zones in three provinces,
💧 secure legal protection for at least two additional Critically Endangered migratory fish.

It will also increase education and awareness of the Mekong fishes and fisheries while also solidifying the importance of these with national policy.

🎥 WATCH: 'The Hidden Gem of Borneo's Peat Swamps', a new film about SHOAL and IUCN ASAP partner Tropical Conservation Society (TCS)

Deep within the dense peat swamp forests of Borneo lives a hidden gem, small but strikingly beautiful fish confined to a tiny range in one of the world's most threatened habitats.

🐟 Parosphromenus ornaticauda, otherwise known as the Redtail Licorice Gourami

The film captures TCS's vital work to save the Critically Endangered fish species in West Kalimantan, Indonesia

We're proud and excited for SHOAL to support this critical work, in collaboration with IUCN Asian Species Action Partnership (ASAP)
