Please Don’t Put Us in a Cup
Yesterday, at an art exhibition, I saw a painting that really touched me. The artist was explaining the meaning of the painting, which showed a small tumbler toy without arms or legs placed inside a cup.
As I listened to her explanation, it made me think deeply about our lives as persons with disabilities.
We may lose our limbs, but we do not lose our ability to stand for what we believe in.
Please don’t put people with disabilities into a “cup” and define us as people who cannot do anything—people who must be separated into disability groups, who cannot work or earn a living, and whom others must simply take care of.
We can work. We can take responsibility. We can make decisions. We can contribute. And we can lead.
Losing a limb does not mean losing our value, our dreams, our dignity, or our ability to lead.
Please don’t put us in a cup.
Give us opportunities.
Give us space.
Let us stand, participate, and lead alongside everyone
