Moloair: “Wait… what are YOU doing here?” 👀🐘

After 5pm is usually her quiet time. By then, she’s already in her bedroom area, settling into a slower, more peaceful part of her day. There aren’t visitors walking around anymore, no extra movement—just a calm, familiar routine. Most days, the only person she’ll see during this time is her mahout.

So when we appeared near her enclosure this evening, it was definitely out of the ordinary for her.

Moloair didn’t ignore it. Instead, she climbed up to take a proper look: slowly, carefully, and with clear curiosity. She wasn’t startled or uncomfortable, just attentive. Watching, observing, trying to understand why something had changed in a part of her day that’s usually so still.

Elephants are highly aware of their surroundings, especially when it comes to routine. Even a small shift can catch their attention immediately.

For Moloair, this moment was just that, a small, unexpected change. But it was enough to spark her curiosity and remind us how closely they notice the world around them.

Haven is having the time of his life today 🐘💦 splashing around in the pool like nothing else matters. You can tell he’s completely in his own little world—kicking water, rolling around, and just enjoying being a kid.

But what makes this moment even more special is what’s happening just behind him. His mom stands quietly, watching every move. She doesn’t interrupt, doesn’t step in… just stays close enough to make sure he’s safe. It’s that gentle, constant kind of care—the kind that doesn’t need to be loud to be strong.

There’s something really comforting about seeing that balance. Freedom in front, protection in the background. Haven gets to play, explore, and be curious, while his mom makes sure nothing goes too far.

Moments like this are simple, but they say a lot. Even in the middle of all that splashing and chaos, there’s trust, there’s care, and there’s a quiet kind of love that’s always present.

Evening care is an important part of life at the sanctuary 🐘💧

Each day, as the temperature begins to cool, we take time to shower and gently brush our elephants. This routine helps remove dirt, dried mud, and any buildup on their skin, keeping it clean and healthy. Brushing also supports circulation and allows us to check closely for small wounds, irritation, or sensitive areas that might need extra attention.

In the wild, elephants naturally take care of their skin by dusting themselves with soil, bathing in rivers, and moving across large areas. Their environment constantly changes, including where they rest.

For elephants living under human care, things are different. They cannot change their sleeping area as frequently as wild elephants, which means maintaining cleanliness becomes part of our responsibility. Daily washing helps ensure their skin stays in good condition despite these limitations.

This routine is not rushed. It’s a calm, consistent process where elephants can feel comfortable and familiar with the people around them. Over time, it also helps build trust between the elephants and their caretakers.

Simple as it may seem, this daily care plays a key role in their overall well-being—supporting both their physical health and their sense of comfort.

Her journey brings her here… and with each step off the truck, a new chapter begins. 🐘🩵

This is Boon Mee, around 55 years old, who has just arrived at Samui Elephant Haven.

Her journey to us happened during the Songkran period — a time in Thailand that symbolizes renewal, new beginnings, and gently letting go of the past. With the kind support from Haven Elephant Café & Restaurant, who made her rescue possible, she was given a new name… “Songkran.”

A name that carries hope.
We chose this name so she can begin this new chapter holding onto something positive — something gentle.

For many years, she lived closely alongside people. And now… everything around her has changed.
It’s quieter. Slower.

At times, she seems a little unsure… as if she’s still learning that here, she doesn’t need to do anything.
That she can simply be an elephant.

There is no rush.
Only time, space, and patience.

We are deeply grateful to Haven Elephant Café & Restaurant, and to all of our visitors, for making this possible — and to everyone who continues to support moments like this.

Welcome to your new beginning, Boon Mee… Songkran.

This is just the beginning… we’ll share more of her journey with you 🤍🐘

Mornings usually begin quietly, with the herd easing into the day together. 🌤️

But today, something felt different almost immediately.

One of them wasn’t there.

Elephants rely strongly on their sense of smell to know who’s nearby. It’s one of their most important ways of recognizing each other. And this morning, that familiar scent was missing.

Within moments, the atmosphere shifted.

They began calling—loud trumpets echoing across the space, repeated and purposeful. These calls aren’t random. They’re used to reach each other over distance, especially when one is out of range. Alongside that, there are low rumbles too, some too deep for us to hear, traveling even farther.

They began moving, searching, and calling out across the area.

She wasn’t far. There was no danger.

She was just a little late.

Even so, that short absence, just enough for her scent to disappear, was enough for the others to notice right away.

This kind of behavior reflects how socially aware elephants are and how closely they monitor each other’s presence.

So… who kept everyone waiting this morning? 🤎

April heat in Thailand is no joke… and these two definitely know how to handle it. 🫠

Today, these two spent their afternoon enjoying a full mud spa together—something you’ll often see during hot days like this. Elephant skin is actually quite thin, especially along the back, and with very little hair, it can be sensitive to direct sunlight. ☀️

That’s where mud comes in. It acts like a natural sunscreen, forming a protective layer that helps block the sun, retain moisture, and keep their skin cool. Even after it dries, it continues to protect them as they move around.

So while it might look like a fun moment, it’s actually an important part of their daily care routine.

Now it’s your turn—can you guess who these two muddy best friends are? 👀🐘

We would like to thank the veterinary team from Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College for spending three days with us at Samui Elephant Haven.

During their visit, the team carried out a series of health checks across our herd. This included following up on Sorn Ram’s abscess, which had previously been treated last December, to ensure that the healing process is continuing as expected.

They also collected blood samples from Sudarat and Saen Dee for further health analysis, allowing us to better understand their current condition for elderly elephants and monitor any changes that may not be immediately visible.

In addition to these specific cases, the team conducted general health assessments for our elephants, carefully checking their overall condition and wellbeing.

Having this level of detailed and consistent care is an important part of what we do. It allows us to stay informed, make better decisions, and ensure that each elephant continues to receive the attention they need.

We truly appreciate the time, effort, and care the team dedicated throughout these three days.

Thank you for your support and for being part of the ongoing care of our elephants.

Thank you to everyone who has sent love, messages, and kind thoughts for Sri Nin. We’ve been reading them all, and they truly mean so much to us. 🤍

Sri Nin had a quiet, steady presence. She wasn’t the kind to demand attention, but somehow she always drew you in. Gentle, patient, and calm—she had a way of making everything feel softer around her.

One of the most special parts of her life here was becoming a nanny to Haven, Somboon’s son. From the day Haven was born, Sri Nin stayed close by their side. For nearly seven years, they grew up together. You would often find her walking near them, watching over them, or simply standing close, as if she understood her role perfectly.

She was protective in the gentlest way. Never forceful, never loud—just always there.

Those moments are what we will remember most. Not big events, but the everyday scenes: the three of them side by side, moving slowly, peacefully, together.

Sri Nin was one of the first elephants here, and she helped shape the heart of this place.

We will miss her deeply, but we’re grateful for every moment we had with her.

Thank you for remembering her with us. 🐘🙏

Yesterday evening, we laid Sri Nin to rest. 🤍

After she passed away on April 18th, we spent the day preparing a place for her. Everything was done slowly, with care. It was important to us that her final space felt peaceful.

In the evening, our team gathered together. We invited monk to lead prayers, and everyone from Samui Elephant Haven came to be there. No one said much. We just stood together.

Before we laid her to rest, we covered her with flowers. 💐

It was simple. No long ceremony, no big words. Just small actions that meant something.

Sri Nin had been part of this place for a long time. Seeing her go like this was not easy, no matter how prepared you think you are. But we are grateful that we were able to be there for her until the very end.

Sri Nin now rests peacefully.

We are heartbroken to share that Sri Nin passed away peacefully this evening.

Aging is something we cannot overcome. No matter how much care, love, or effort we give, there are moments when nature takes its course. At around 5:00 AM today, her mahout alerted us that she had fallen. Our team acted immediately—bringing in a crane to help lift her, and calling a veterinarian to administer treatment, including medication and fluids.
We stayed by her side all day.

At 6:38 PM, Sri Nin quietly left us.

Her story is one of resilience. We rescued Sri Nin nearly 10 years ago after she spent almost her entire life working in the logging industry. It was a life of heavy labor that took a toll on her body over time, especially her legs. Even after logging, she continued working in an elephant riding camp. Later, she was moved to an elephant riding camp.

When she came to us, everything changed.

At Samui Elephant Haven, she experienced freedom for the first time in a very long time. For nearly a decade, she lived without chains, surrounded by a herd, with the ability to choose how she spent her days. She was one of the very first elephants to arrive at our sanctuary, and she became a part of our foundation.

We will always remember her gentle presence.

Rest in peace, Sri Nin. 🤍

If you’ve been following us for a long time, you’ll probably feel something a little different watching this 🤍

Seeing Moloair, Kwan Samui, and Nong Pech standing side by side like this isn’t something that happens often anymore. Over time, things have quietly changed. Moloair, being older, has found her own rhythm. She doesn’t really join in the playful energy like she used to. These days, she prefers slow walks, foraging peacefully, usually right next to her favorite—grandma Sudarat.

Meanwhile, Kwan Samui and Nong Pech are still very much in their “girls being girls” phase. Playing, getting dirty, sticking close to each other, always full of energy. Their world is still all about fun and curiosity.

So seeing them all stand next to each other like this again just felt… nice. No reason in particular, just the three of them, sharing the same space again, even if only for a little while.

It’s a quiet reminder that even as relationships shift and change over time, the connection is still there… just in a different form.
