A story from our partner: Agroecology for Safe School Meals, Laos PDR

Growing Hope: NAFC and Local Schools Cultivate a Greener Future in Luang Prabang
LUANG PRABANG — Pak Ou | February 9–13, 2026
A transformative movement is taking root in the schoolyards of Northern Laos. From February 9–13, the Environmental Conservation Team of Luang Prabang Agriculture and Forestry College (NAFC) led a 5-day journey to bring sustainable, chemical-free food to five primary schools: Phonxai, Xanxuk, Pakxuang, Pak Ou (Tham Ting), and Xang Hai.
A Community Effort
This initiative was more than a classroom lesson—it was a true community gathering. Supported by The Field Alliance (TFA), the NAFC team worked side-by-side with local education, agriculture, and health offices to train 245 participants. Among them were 140 women, including village heads, farmers, and students, all eager to learn the art of self-sufficiency.
Hands-on Skills for Life
The school grounds buzzed with activity as participants mastered five essential skills:
🌱 Production: Raising healthy chickens and growing organic vegetables.
♻️ Sustainability: Turning waste into rich compost and mastering waste sorting.
🍽️ Health: Understanding the nutrition and hygiene behind every meal.

Beyond the Training
This project model is designed to bridging the gap between agricultural experts and local schools, they aren't just providing a meal—they are ensuring that the next generation knows exactly how to grow their own.
As these five schools begin their journey, they carry with them the tools to nourish their students and protect their environment for years to come.

Agroecology for Safe School Meals Program
From Seed to Student: A Story of How Our Myanmar Partners are Cultivating Food Safety

Nourishing Success: A Month of Care in Hlegu Township
This February, the school bells in Hlegu Township rang with a little more energy than usual. Gold Myanmar Future Light (GMFL), with the vital support of The Field Alliance (TFA) successfully rolled out the Safe School Meals Program, reaching one primary school and four pre-schools across the region.
The initiative was built on a simple but powerful idea: community-led nutrition. Rather than outside catering, it was the teachers and school committee members who took the lead. They hand-selected fresh, local ingredients and spent their mornings preparing balanced meals—ensuring that every child received the proteins, vitamins, and minerals essential for their growing bodies.
Throughout the month, the menu was a vibrant celebration of Myanmar’s culinary heritage. Pre-schoolers at Kyot Kone, Nyaung Kone, Kale Htaw, and Ou Yin Wa enjoyed everything from traditional Mohinga and tapioca with jaggery to nutrient-dense quail eggs and soy milk. To keep energy levels high, snack times were filled with a colorful "fruit medley" of watermelon, papaya, and even fresh strawberries.
One of the most touching highlights occurred during the final week of February at Kyot Kone Primary School. As nine Grade 5 students stayed on-site to focus on their crucial year-end examinations, the program stepped up to provide full, 24-hour meal support. From fried rice breakfasts to hearty fish curry dinners, these students were given the peace of mind to study hard without the worry of where their next meal would come from.
By the end of February, over 200 students were better nourished and better prepared for their futures. This program is a shining example of how local dedication and international partnership can come together to protect the health and dreams of our children.

Strengthening School Meals through Agroecology! 🇹🇭🤝🇱🇦

Today, The Field Alliance was honored to organize a special study visit for our partners from Laos PDR—the Environmental Conservation Team of Luang Prabang Agriculture and Forestry College (NAFC). We visited Suraoklong 19 School in Chachoengsao, a shining star in our Agroecology School Network!
Led by School Director Ms. Nittaya Matsayo, this school is a powerful example of how community and education can blend to create a sustainable school lunch program. With 148 students and 15 dedicated teachers.
✨ Highlights of our visit included:
• Green School Garden: We explored the students' garden projects where they grow organic ingredients following the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of King Rama IX.
• From Garden to Canteen: We saw how these fresh harvests are integrated into the school lunch program, supported by local wisdom and community collaboration.
• Student-Led Projects: Our visitors were impressed by student demonstrations in cooking, crafts, and organic products.
• Life Skills: We witnessed the discipline of students serving themselves and taking responsibility for cleaning their own plates—a simple but vital part of their moral education.
The unique of "One Classroom, One Career" initiative provided incredible inspiration for our partners.
This visit was a vital step for the Agroecology for School Meals project in Luang Prabang.
A huge thank you to the directors, teachers, and students of Suraoklong 19 School for the warm welcome!
