Born in 1868 in Racine, Wisconsin, Paul Harris pursued a career in law after earning his degree from the University of Iowa. His professional journey led him to Chicago in 1896, where he established a successful legal practice.

On February 23, 1905, Harris convened a meeting with three business acquaintances—Silvester Schiele, Gustavus Loehr, and Hiram Shorey—at Loehr's office. This modest gathering laid the foundation for what would become Rotary International, an organization initially conceived to foster camaraderie and mutual support among business leaders through regular rotations of meeting locations, hence the name "Rotary."
