Women's Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE)

Women's Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE) Empowers displaced women from Myanmar and Thai host community through education, partnered with WEAVE Fair Trade.

WEAVE Fair Trade Social Enterprise (WFT-SE) works with displaced, disadvantaged and marginalized ethnic women from Burma and in Northern Thailand. WFT-SE facilitates access and opportunities to generate safe and fair income through handicrafts development and support to preserve time-honored artisanry and culture. Through our partnership with MADE51, refugee women artisans connect their heritage skills to global markets, turning weaving and embroidery into sustainable livelihoods.

This engagement is vital: it promotes economic inclusion, strengthens protection, and ensures refugee women are recognized not only as survivors but as leaders and change-makers in their communities.

Together, WEAVE women x MADE51 weave futures where resilience meets opportunity, and where every artisan’s story is honored through fair trade.

At Women's Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE), we are Sewing Futures and Building Justice!

Embroidery and sewing training under WEAVE’s Fair Trade model open doors to safe and dignified livelihoods for marginalized refugee women. These skills are not just crafts — they are tools of survival, economic inclusion, and leadership.

WEAVE’s development justice framework ensures that women excluded from formal work opportunities still access meaningful income, cultural pride, and recognition as changemakers. Every product they create is a testament to resilience, artistry, and the right to dignified work.

Refugee women artisans are not just workers — they are leaders weaving futures of justice and empowerment.

From refugee camp to global stage, Kumo stitches hope into every thread. Her persistence and skill shine through in every piece — from delicate embroidery to the enchanting Mystic Owl in the MADE51 Holiday Collection.

The rhythmic sound of a loom carries more than thread—it carries healing.

For many refugee women, weaving is a safe place to reconnect with their culture, share their stories, and find strength in one another. What begins as learning a skill becomes a journey of healing, protection, and renewed hope.

Through WEAVE's feminist and Development Justice approach, every weaving session creates a space where women can heal, lead, and rebuild their lives with dignity.

Together, we are weaving more than beautiful textiles—we are weaving resilient communities and brighter futures.

EmpowerHER Project: Protection Through Livelihoods

In the 9 refugee camps along the Thai–Myanmar border, women shoulder the responsibility of survival while facing shrinking food assistance and limited opportunities. Without legal access to work, their vulnerability deepens.

EmpowerHER is more than a livelihood project — it is a protection mechanism. By strengthening textile-based skills and connecting refugee women to ethical markets, it safeguards their dignity, reduces exploitation risks, and builds safe, sustainable futures.

💪 When refugee women weave, they weave protection, autonomy, and resilience.

Thank you Fondation Loom and UNHCR Mae Hong Son, Thailand for the solidarity and support!

On 2026, we honor the extraordinary strength, resilience, creativity, and courage of Karenni refugee women artisans who continue to weave hope, dignity, and opportunity into every thread of their work.

The collection of Karenni products are lovingly co-created by 82 Karenni refugee and Thai host community artisans through the partnership of WEAVEwomen, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and MADE51: Crafted by Refugees. Anchored in time-honored traditional weaving knowledge, cultural heritage, and indigenous craftsmanship, this initiative demonstrates how culture can become a powerful pathway to protection, empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods.

Together with MADE51 designers and dedicated local artists, the Karenni refugee women artisans have transformed their stories, symbols, and weaving traditions into beautiful handcrafted pieces that reflect journeys of perseverance, learning, healing, and self-reliance. Every creation carries a story of overcoming adversity and building a future with dignity.

Through the Karenni Women Artisan Collective, refugee women are reclaiming their economic agency, transforming traditional skills into meaningful income, renewed confidence, and opportunities that strengthen their families and communities.

Today and everyday, we celebrate not only their remarkable artistry but also their unwavering determination to thrive despite displacement. Their resilience reminds us that refugees are not defined by the challenges they face, but by the strength, talent, and contributions they bring to the world.

Join us in supporting refugee women artisans and helping create a future where every refugee can live with safety, dignity, and opportunity.
