Happy World Rabies Day! Rock on to everyone doing their bit in the mission against rabies.

Huge shout out to our founding partners in the International Rabies Task Force, MSD Animal Health and CDC Global Health , for this amazing poster showing where we’re working to prevent rabies. Across 24 countries we’ve vaccinated 2,205,893 dogs (exact numbers only!) and averted thousands of human and dog exposures and deaths. It honestly fills me with joy.

A massive thank you to my incredible Worldwide Veterinary Service /MR colleagues who inspire me every single day in this very “winnable” fight. Here’s a pic of a few of the crew jumping for joy (of course) from back in the day. James somehow managed to jump AND keep his hat on. Can he still jump that high? NEVER doubt it.

Here’s to the mission, and to everyone committed to making a difference. Cambodia in a few weeks, Laos in November. Let’s GO!!

For dogs, routine vaccination is one of the most effective tools we have to stop rabies at its source. Vaccinating enough of the dog population can interrupt transmission and protect both animals and people.

For humans, modern rabies vaccines can be given before potential exposure, particularly to those working closely with animals or travelling to areas where rabies remains a risk. They can also be given urgently after a potential exposure, alongside immediate wound care and, in some cases, rabies immunoglobulin.

The most important thing to remember? Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it is entirely preventable.

That’s why vaccination remains at the heart of the global fight against this devastating disease.

Getting the spotlight this Saturday: Darjeeling. 🐾🇮🇳

Last week, the Mission Rabies team joined forces with DGAS and Darjeeling Municipality for the annual mass dog anti-rabies vaccination campaign.

From 1-5 September, teams worked across Darjeeling Municipality, reaching community dogs wherever they are - even when that means navigating difficult roads, muddy paths, streams and hills.

What I particularly love about this campaign is the emphasis on doing it together, and doing it right.

Vaccinating dogs is one of the most effective ways we can prevent rabies and protect both animals and people. Wherever possible, the teams use hand-catching and low-stress handling to keep fear and stress to a minimum. Every dog vaccinated is another step towards a rabies-free Darjeeling. 🐕

More to come soon.

I’m incredibly proud that WVS can play a part in supporting the next generation of veterinary professionals and giving innovative ideas the opportunity to make a real-world difference.

Congratulations again to the team. I’m looking forward to seeing where this project goes.

🧡 In 2013, we started with one goal: end rabies.

After witnessing the devastating impact rabies has on both people and animals, WVS Founder and CEO Luke Gamble launched Mission Rabies.

What began in India, one of the world's rabies hotspots, has grown into a global movement. Today, our vaccination, education and surveillance programmes operate across multiple countries, helping protect communities from this entirely preventable disease.

Mission Rabies Malawi and India are now flagship programmes, with dedicated in-country teams working year-round to eliminate rabies.

From Tanzania and Guinea to Cambodia and beyond, we're working alongside governments, communities and partners to create a safer future for people and dogs alike 🐕💉

There's still work to do, but together, we can end rabies for good.

Getting the spotlight this Saturday: Make a genuine difference for animals and communities in Botswana.

If you’re an experienced vet or vet nurse looking for something a little different in 2027, this is one to have on your radar.

The team at Maun Animal Welfare Society do hugely important work supporting animals and communities in Botswana, and they’re looking for experienced vets and vet nurses to join their volunteer placements throughout 2027.

You’ll have the chance to work alongside dedicated local teams, support animal welfare programmes and, most importantly, make a genuine difference to animals who need it.

It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after you’ve come home.

If you’re interested in getting involved, head to the volunteering section via the link in my bio to find out more and apply.

Our Veterinary Taskforce is a vital point of care for animals and communities where access to veterinary support can be limited.

I’m incredibly proud of the specialist vets who make up this team. They don’t just provide hands-on veterinary care; they share knowledge, train local veterinary professionals and help build skills that can continue long after they have left.

From surgical training to emergency support and championing the One Health approach, the Taskforce is helping to raise the standard of care and create lasting change.

This summer has been another brilliant example of that work in action.

🦔🐶🍂 Autumn is coming...Got hedgehogs visiting your garden and a dog at home?

If you watch my latest reel, you will get to see one of the little visitors I had in my garden - https://www.instagram.com/p/DctQKJPji6Z/?hl=en

A little extra care can make a big difference. Hedgehogs are mostly active at night, so if you know they’re visiting, keep an eye on your dog when they’re outside after dark. A curious dog can easily frighten or injure a hedgehog, while those spines can cause an uncomfortable surprise for your dog!

If your dog does find one, calmly call them away and give the hedgehog space. And if you find a hedgehog that looks injured, unwell or is struggling, contact your local wildlife rescue for advice.

We recently built a hedgehog box and it has become a popular place of respite when Freddie is outside.
