Welcome to the ECHO Asia Impact Center, a regional branch of ECHO Global based in Florida, USA. Our mission is to serve as a resource for agriculturalists and development workers working in the Asia region, as an expression of our love for God and our neighbors. We hold workshops, training events, conferences, and internships at our Small Farm Resource Center on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, Thaila

nd. The center also hosts demonstrations of various sustainable agriculture practices appropriate to smallholder farmers. Periodically, we also coordinate conferences and training events with local partners within the Asia region. Our farm is also home to a regional Seed Bank, which houses a collection of hard-to-find seeds that thrive in the tropics and subtropics. Through the ECHO Asia Seed Bank, network members can acquire small sample seed packets or purchase bulk orders of selected seeds. For those not located in Thailand, we offer a large collection of technical materials online, including how-to guides, research publications, manuals, videos, plant fact sheets, and more.

Our Research and Farm teams are working hand in hand to explore sustainable alternatives for animal feed. Together, we are studying the potential of Azolla and Duckweed—small aquatic plants with big impact.

These plants are low-cost, easy to grow, and rich in protein, making them a promising option for small-scale farmers seeking resilient and affordable feed solutions.

Wisdom above the fire… sustainable seed saving🫘🌱

In Karen homes, the hearth is not only used for cooking or warmth—it also serves as a place to store seeds. Farmers hang or place their carefully selected seeds above the fire using different materials such as cloth wrapping, plastic bags, bamboo baskets, or plastic containers. The gentle heat and smoke help keep the seeds dry and protect them from insects, preparing them for the next planting season each year.

At ECHO, we believe there is so much to learn from local communities. Our research team is beginning to further study this practice, focusing on key factors such as temperature, humidity, and seed germination rates from seeds stored this way across multiple villages. This will help us better understand the effectiveness of this traditional seed-saving wisdom that has been passed down through generations.
🌾🔥ภูมิปัญญาบนที่ผิงไฟ…การเก็บเมล็ดพันธุ์อย่างยั่งยืน

ในบ้านของชาวกะเหรี่ยง “ที่ผิงไฟ” ไม่ได้มีไว้แค่หุงหาอาหารหรือให้ความอบอุ่นเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นที่เก็บเมล็ดพันธุ์อีกด้วย ชาวบ้านจะนำเมล็ดพันธุ์ที่คัดเลือกอย่างดีไปแขวนหรือวางเหนือเตาไฟในรูปแบบอาทิ หีบห่อด้วยผ้า ถุงพลาสติก ตะกร้าไม้ไผ่ และตะกร้าพลาสติก เป็นต้น โดยความอุ่นและควันไฟจะช่วยให้เมล็ดแห้งและป้องกันแมลงศัตรูที่จะเข้ามามากัดกินเมล็ด เพื่อเตรียมความพร้อมสำหรับการปลูกพืชในฤดูกาลถัดไปของทุกๆ ปี

Our farm at ECHO Asia is full of many kinds of plants, growing, flowering, and bearing fruit. All of this comes from the hands and willing hearts of our farm staff, who faithfully care for these seeds and help them grow.🍃🐛

Our apprentice’s story 🌱🌿 EP.2 | Rejuvenate with Indigenous Materials

Learning with our Farm Department, this is the story of Khosato from Oriental Theological Seminary, Nagaland.

Khosato has been learning alongside our team about practical ways to reduce farm costs, including producing animal feed and applying the deep litter pig system using locally available materials. By making the most of what is already on the farm, these methods help improve efficiency and sustainability.

He has also learned how to ferment animal feed to extend its shelf life, as well as how to make and apply Indigenous Microorganisms (IMOs) to restore soil health using natural, locally sourced inputs.

These simple yet impactful techniques can be shared and adapted within his community.

We pray that God will guide his journey in developing a demonstration farm for students and others who are interested, showing sustainable and hopeful alternatives for the future.

Research Sharing Day 🌱 Today, our research team and farm team came together to present and share the results of their ongoing work.

🍃 Saeng and Dore shared insights from using of biochar and manure to improve soil quality.
🐛 Boo presented on natural pesticide development.
🫘 Michaela and Wit also led a hands-on demonstration on testing seed moisture content.
