Baan Dek Foundation

Baan Dek Foundation Fostering children's access to education, health, and safety services. public schools, health centers, shelters, and the Ministries of Health and Education).

Created in 2002, Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) is a Thai-registered Foundation with a mission to provide access to education, health and safety services for vulnerable children living in urban slums and construction site camps in Thailand. These children are often left unattended in these severely hazardous living environments while their parents are at work on construction sites. They experience limi

ted access to essential services and their fundamental rights, and are at high risk of neglect, abuse and exploitation. BDF maintains and builds upon an extensive network of multi-sector partnerships that contribute to its operations. BDF forms innovative MOU partnerships with Thai real estate and construction companies (key private sector stakeholders) to reach large numbers of vulnerable families in need and establishes relationships with public services to support these families (ex. Today, the Foundation supports over 1,500 vulnerable children in Thailand every year through complementary programs that provide sustainable support and life-saving access to education, health, and safety. BDF achieves systemic impact in the Thai construction sector by working with major property and construction companies to improve living conditions for labor migrants and their families. At present, Baan Dek Foundation has offices in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, Thailand. Get involved with us! Visit www.baandekfoundation.org

For many families living in construction site camps, access to education is often shaped by small but significant barriers, from school registration and transportation to the cost of uniforms for growing children.

Through BDF’s Individual School Support (ISS) Project, we work alongside families, schools, communities, and responsible employers to help children continue their education with greater confidence and stability. This includes supporting school registration processes, facilitating transport between camps and schools, and helping families access essential school supplies when needed.

For L., receiving a new school uniform meant more than just new clothes, it meant being able to return to school comfortably, confidently, and with dignity.

Because sometimes, staying in school starts with something as simple as having clothes that fit a growing child.

Language barriers remain one of the biggest challenges many women face when navigating daily life in Thailand, limiting access to opportunities, public services, and even confidence in communicating with others.

Through our Women’s Empowerment Project (WEP), vulnerable women are supported through Thai language classes designed to strengthen reading, writing, and speaking skills. Led by a professional teacher and offered across beginner to advanced levels, classes are conducted online, making it easier for women from different communities to participate after work while still managing family responsibilities at home.

Beyond language learning, these classes help women build confidence, support their children’s education, access healthcare and essential services, manage household finances, and apply vocational skills more effectively within their communities, creating stronger foundations for greater independence, income generation, and long-term wellbeing.

For many migrant children in Thailand, going to school remains a challenge due to financial pressures, transportation and language barriers, and complex school registration processes. Many families also need support navigating communication with schools, teachers, and local authorities.

This year, through BDF’s Individual School Support (ISS) Project, we supported over 700 children across 41 communities, checking in individually with each child to understand their specific education needs. This support covered school-related expenses such as enrollment fees, uniforms, stationery, and other essential learning materials.

By easing the financial burden on parents, we help ensure that more children can stay in school, continue learning, and access the opportunities every child deserves.

Every year, BDF reinforces its commitment to transparency, collaboration, and strong internal standards through our Annual Mandatory Training.

This year's training covered key areas including financial processes, anti-fraud and anti-bribery measures, child safeguarding, and the prevention of child sexual abuse and exploitation. Teams also joined new sessions on BDF's 2026–2030 MEL Framework and internal processes for new funding opportunities.

By strengthening shared knowledge and understanding across our teams, we continue to build a culture of transparency and collaboration, helping us work more effectively in the best interests of the children and families we serve.

We're excited to recap this year's , which welcomed over 200 children from vulnerable communities and brought together 16 partners from the private, government, and NGO sectors to create safe, fun, and engaging activities during the school holidays.

From creative crafts and hands-on activities to sports, health awareness, haircuts, and a planetarium visit, children had the chance to explore, learn, move, imagine, and connect with others.

Have a look at the highlights that brought smiles, confidence, and new memories together.

This Labor Day, we stand alongside the construction workers and their families who power Thailand's construction sector, many of whom remain unseen but are essential to the cities we live in every day.

At BDF, our work is driven by the mission of improving the well being of these families so they can access public services of healthcare care and education in the country they're building. In 2025 alone, together with construction leaders on a deep value alignment: we have reached over 14,000 construction supporting their access to healthcare, and essential services.

This week we launched our new report: Structural Precariousness: Recruitment and Employment Practices of Migrant Workers in Bangkok Metropolitan Region's Construction Industry, hosted SEA-Junction.

Developed through BDF's Building Social Impact Initiative (BSI), in collaboration with Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR) at Mahidol University, with support from our partners Kindernothilfe (KNH) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the report examines how recruitment and employment practices shape the lives and well-being of migrant workers and their families in Thailand's construction sector.

Findings highlight how some existing and unethical recruitment systems can exacerbate vulnerabilities for workers and their families.

We are grateful to workers, construction companies, IPSR at Mahidol University, Kindernothilfe and BMZ for this collective work toward the common goal of improving well being of workers, their families and their children following them.

Through the Women’s Empowerment Project (WEP), BDF supports vulnerable women to build confidence, strengthen financial management skills, and take concrete steps toward improving their personal and economic situations.

During the most recent core training, the WEP team observed a powerful shift among participating mothers: many began to see financial planning as a pathway to stability. For women balancing costs such as work permits, health insurance, and family needs, this matters. Many shared that they felt more confident to plan ahead, manage debt, avoid informal loans, and start saving toward their goals.

At BDF, empowerment starts from within and grows through opportunity.

Smile Holidays is more than just fun: it provides a safe environment for vulnerable children during the school break, where they can play, learn, and socialize.

Each activity is designed to support children’s holistic development, from sports and physical development to health awareness, creativity, and hands-on skills such as crafts.

Let's hear from the children themselves!

Happy Songkran 2026!

In Thailand, this week we're celebrating the Thai New Year, recognizing that it's a special time for everyone, especially the families in the communities we serve, where togetherness builds resilience and happiness. As part of the celebration, water is splashed to welcome a fresh start, and is gently poured over the hands of elders to show gratitude and respect.

We're sending our heartfelt wishes to all the children, families, team members, partners, and friends of BDF. May this New Year bring joy, good health, and beautiful new beginnings.
