Child’s Dream exists to ensure that children and young adults in the Mekong Sub-Region, affected by inequality, grow up to be healthy and have access to quality education and employment opportunities. To achieve this, we design, implement, and partner to support interventions in Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Thailand. These interventions focus on education, employability, youth empowerment, lead

ership, and basic and essential healthcare. Our team is made up of passionate, purpose-driven individuals connected by a common set of values; we aim to support beneficiaries in becoming educated and empowered people who responsibly shape and sustain fair, just and healthy societies for generations to come.

This International Youth Day, we are celebrating the ambitious students across our High School and Vocational Education Scholarship Programmes. Day in and day out, our scholars continue pursuing their education despite the many challenges that stand in their way.

Many balance classes with part-time jobs. Others care for younger siblings or elderly relatives between assignments. Some navigate unfamiliar schools, heavier workloads and new teaching styles, all while managing long commutes or personal challenges.

There are countless reasons to give up, but every day these young people choose to keep moving forward against the odds. Today, let’s come together to celebrate their remarkable perseverance, commitment and resilience!

Good news from Lao PDR!

The country’s first Youth Advisory Board to the United Nations Country Team has officially launched, and we’re extremely proud that four of its ten inaugural members are connected to Child’s Dream. The Board includes three current students and one alumnus of our Lao PDR Domestic Bachelor’s Programme, part of our wider University Scholarship Programme.

This new platform gives young people a direct voice in informing UN programmes and initiatives locally – ensuring that the perspectives of youth from diverse backgrounds contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable future in the country.

For us, this milestone is a strong example of Child’s Dream’s mission: investing in young people so they can develop their potential, step into leadership roles, and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Landlocked geography is quietly fuelling educational inequality.

Without a coastline, countries such as Lao PDR face greater economic barriers, relying on neighbouring countries for trade routes and access to global markets. Over time, these pressures trickle down – affecting the cost of living and opportunities available to families.

According to the World Bank’s latest household welfare data, average monthly household income per capita in Lao PDR was approximately 2.71M LAK, or around US$119 / €105, as of December 2024.

In our education programmes, this financial pressure remains one of the biggest challenges students face: whether to stay in school, or leave early to work and help support their families.

But when young people leave school early, they miss out on the reading, numeracy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that open doors to better work and more stable incomes.

On this , let’s remember that circumstances beyond a child’s control should not determine how far they can go. 🌏

For students in , financial hardship remains one of the barriers preventing many young people from completing upper secondary education.

Through the Basic Education High School Scholarship Cambodia (BESSC), Child’s Dream supports underserved students with scholarships that enable them to continue their studies and pursue future opportunities. Today, we celebrate the achievements of our BESSC graduates and the journey they have taken towards a future filled with new possibilities.

For many young people in , poverty, limited livelihood opportunities, and economic hardship are key drivers in the search for better opportunities. However, this search can come with unimaginable risks of trafficking and exploitation, particularly among vulnerable youth.

Our partner Village Focus International provides safe accommodation as well as life skills and vocational training to survivors of and youth at risk of trafficking. These opportunities equip them with competencies and confidence to build sustainable livelihoods and independent futures.

On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, let us continue to open educational pathways that enable young people to shape their future with dignity, resilience, and hope.

Can you imagine walking kilometres to school, only to arrive at a classroom made from wooden beams, dirt floors, and tin roofing?

Would you be able to concentrate in that kind of environment?

Learning in unsafe, weather-exposed classrooms can make it incredibly hard for children and youth to focus. Replacing these structures with sturdy, permanent classrooms gives students a safer and more stable place to learn.

Over 20 years ago, Child’s Dream began building its first educational infrastructure projects in rural areas. Today, we are proud to have built 508 schools, 82 boarding houses, 166 clean water systems, and 177 playgrounds across the Mekong Sub-Region – and counting!

Working across Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand means navigating different cultures, contexts and challenges, while staying connected to one shared mission. This week, the members of our leadership team came together for a few days of reflection, discussion and shared learning.

Why does this time together matter?

This is the equivalent of the number of young people whom Child's Dream has supported over the past two decades. Behind every number is a young person gaining the knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape their own future and create lasting change for their families and communities.
Today, we celebrate the resilience and potential of these young people, who inspire us to keep bridging gaps until opportunities are within everyone's reach.

For many students, staying in school is a matter of cost, not motivation. In Thailand, UNICEF data showed that 29% of children from the poorest families were out of school at the upper secondary level, compared with just 2% from the wealthiest.

Tuition fees, uniforms and transport costs add up quickly, creating financial barriers that can cut education short. Unfortunately, an early exit may limit future job prospects and long-term earning potential, trapping another generation in a cycle of poverty.

To help break this cycle, our Basic Education Scholarship Programme steps in by providing critical financial support to students from marginalised communities, helping them continue onto high school or vocational school.

Our Thailand team spent the last few weeks on the road, visiting participating schools, conducting trainings and welcoming our newest intake of Child's Dream scholars.
