8. Atmospheric Aerosol Loading (การปล่อยมลพิษจากละอองลอยในบรรยากาศ)
Over the past several decades, the world has faced increasingly severe environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and pollution caused by human activities. These issues highlight that human development is placing unprecedented pressure on Earth's systems, potentially exceeding nature's ability to recover.
Planetary Boundaries
The Planetary Boundaries framework was introduced in 2009 by a team of 28 scientists led by Johan Rockström of the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University and Will Steffen of the Australian National University.
The framework defines a "Safe Operating Space for Humanity"—the limits within which humanity can use Earth's resources and alter natural systems without triggering large-scale, irreversible environmental change. To identify these limits, scientists established nine Planetary Boundaries, representing the key Earth system processes that maintain the planet's stability. These boundaries serve as an early warning system for the health of our planet.
Main Objectives
-Identify the environmental limits that humanity should not exceed.
-Provide a scientific framework for sustainable development worldwide.
-Help governments, organizations, and businesses assess their overall environmental impacts on Earth's systems.
Current Status
According to the **2025 Planetary Boundaries assessment, humanity has already exceeded **seven of the nine planetary boundaries. This is a serious warning that Earth's ability to recover and maintain its resilience is being significantly weakened.
Seven Boundaries Beyond the Safe Operating Space
1. Climate Change – High Risk
Human activities, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, are disrupting Earth's energy balance. Atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations have reached record highs, causing global temperatures and ocean heat content to rise beyond safe levels.
2. Biosphere Integrity – High Risk
The rapid decline in biodiversity, driven by accelerating species extinction and ecosystem degradation, is weakening the resilience of natural ecosystems.
3. Land-System Change – Increasing Risk
The conversion of forests, grasslands, and other natural landscapes into agricultural or urban areas is reducing the Earth's capacity to regulate climate and support biodiversity.
4. Freshwater Change – Increasing Risk
Changes in both surface water and groundwater are exceeding nature's ability to replenish freshwater resources, threatening ecosystems and human water security.
5. Biogeochemical Flows (Nitrogen and Phosphorus Cycles) – High Risk
Excessive use of fertilizers and agricultural chemicals has disrupted the natural cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus. Large amounts of these nutrients enter rivers, lakes, and soils, leading to water pollution, eutrophication, and ecosystem degradation.
6. Ocean Acidification – Increasing Risk
The ocean is absorbing increasing amounts of carbon dioxide, making seawater more acidic and threatening marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs and shell-forming organisms.
7. Novel Entities (Synthetic Chemicals and Emerging Pollutants) – High Risk
Human-made substances such as synthetic chemicals, plastics, radioactive materials, and other novel pollutants are accumulating in the environment, causing long-term impacts on ecosystems and human health.
Two Boundaries Still Within the Safe Operating Space
8. Atmospheric Aerosol Loading – Within the Global Safe Limit
Atmospheric aerosols—tiny particles suspended in the air—affect both climate and human health. Although global levels remain within the planetary boundary, some regions, including Southeast Asia, continue to experience severe air pollution.
9. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion – Within the Safe Limit
The stratospheric ozone layer, which protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, is gradually recovering. This is the only planetary boundary showing a clear positive trend, thanks to global efforts to phase out ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
