IOM, in partnership with the Governments of Japan and Sri Lanka, marked a major milestone today.​

​Sixty-three of 135 transitional shelters have been handed over to families affected by Cyclone Ditwah, at an event in Rangalawatta, Kandy.​

At the peak of the emergency, nearly 300,000 people were displaced. Many lost their homes or were forced to relocate from high-risk areas.​

In response, with support from the Government of Japan, IOM facilitated the construction of 135 transitional shelters across Kandy, Badulla, and Nuwara Eliya districts. ​

Turning commitments into coordinated action on migration.​

Members of the Regional UN Network on Migration (UNNM) for Asia and the Pacific gathered to shape the Network’s 2026–2028 workplan, strengthening support to countries in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).​

Discussions focused on priorities including climate change and human mobility, alternatives to detention, access to justice, evidence and knowledge, communications and advocacy, and stronger collaboration along migration routes.​

Members of the Network reaffirmed their commitment to practical, demand-driven support that responds to country priorities, in line with the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) Progress Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly earlier this year.

At Workshop 4, Sumnesh Joshi, a digital policy and technology practitioner with over 25 years of experience, will explore the evolution from digital identity to digital public infrastructure. ​

With extensive experience in digital policy and e-governance, digital inclusion and connectivity, and digital identity, Mr. Joshi brings a practitioner’s perspective on building secure, inclusive and trusted digital systems. ​

Currently serving as Deputy Director-General at the Department of Telecommunications at India’s Ministry of Communications, he will examine how trusted digital infrastructure can strengthen identity verification and mitigate fraud, help people access digital services, and support safer, inclusive mobility. ​

A health unit in Orangi Town, Karachi, Pakistan, once had cracked walls, rain
damage, faulty wiring, and no waiting space.​

With the Kingdom of the Netherlands' support, IOM Pakistan and the District
Health Office restored it, making it better equipped to serve vulnerable
communities.​
