🌏 We’re excited to celebrate a landmark achievement for APAARI!
On 14 October 2026, APAARI officially secured Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) status from the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Dr. Ravi Khetarpal, APAARI’s Executive Director, and H.E. KAN Pharidh, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, signed a Host Country Agreement concerning the establishment of APAARI’s headquarters in Cambodia.

H.E. KAN Pharidh welcomed the Agreement and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for APAARI’s headquarters and operations. Dr. Khetarpal sincerely thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia and reaffirmed APAARI’s commitment to working with Cambodian institutions, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to strengthen agricultural cooperation.

Dr Khetarpal mentioned “This long-awaited legal status of APAARI as an IGO, courtesy Kingdom of Cambodia, has opened up a new dimension of operations for agri-food system transformation in the region and is bound to benefit all its members and partners.”
Special acknowledgement goes to Dr. Ravi Khetarpal and Mr. Manish Rai for their valuable contributions and sustained efforts throughout this journey.

The recognition and Host Country Agreement provide an important foundation for APAARI’s presence and operations in Cambodia. They also create opportunities to deepen cooperation with Cambodian agricultural institutions, APAARI member countries and partners across the Asia-Pacific region.

🌿 World Cotton Day 2026 | Cotton for Good

On 7 October, the world celebrates the contribution of cotton to livelihoods, trade, innovation and sustainable development under the theme: “Cotton for Good: Building Prosperity Through Trade, Transformation and Partnership.”

As the world’s second-largest ready-made garment exporter, Bangladesh plays a central role in the global textile value chain. Yet, the country imports around 97% of the raw cotton required by its spinning and textile mills—highlighting both a significant challenge and an important opportunity for domestic agriculture.

Achieving Bangladesh’s target of producing 1 million bales of cotton by 2030 will require more than increased cultivation. It calls for strengthened, farmer-centred extension services; climate-resilient varieties; regenerative intercropping; digital pest and weather advisory services; small-scale mechanisation; and stronger market linkages for cotton growers.

By connecting research, extension, innovation and markets, Bangladesh can build a more productive, climate-resilient and competitive cotton sector—while improving incomes and opportunities for farming communities.

🚀 New Project | Lao PDR

APAARI is pleased to announce its participation in the "Greater Mekong Subregion Cross-Border Livestock Health and Value Chains Improvement Project (CLHVCIP)", an Asian Development Bank-funded initiative supporting the Government of Lao PDR. Implemented from 9 July 2026 to 8 July 2029, the project will strengthen livestock health, food safety and livestock value-chain performance, while facilitating safer regional trade.

📌 This is APAARI’s first project focused specifically on the livestock sector, representing an important expansion of its technical engagement in livestock health, food safety, value chains and regional trade in Asia and the Pacific.

Working with the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Lao PDR, and partners IDRG Consultancy Services and Projects Consultant Sole Co., Ltd., APAARI contributes to the Critical Skills Development and Policy Support (CS02) consultancy.

Key areas of work include:

🌿 Climate-friendly livestock health and value-chain infrastructure

🐄 Disease Control Zones, animal identification and traceability

📱 Digital livestock information systems and disease surveillance

🧪 Laboratory, quality-control and certification capacity

📚 Institutional capacity development and policy support

🤝 Enabling policies for safer livestock production and trade

Through this collaboration, APAARI will contribute its regional knowledge and technical expertise to support stronger, safer and more sustainable livestock systems in Lao PDR.

🌏 International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 2026

Today, 29 September, marks the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW).

🌱 Food loss and waste are not just about food. They are about the resources, livelihoods and opportunities lost along the food system.

When food is lost or wasted, we also waste the water, land, energy and labour invested in producing it—and contribute to unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.

In the diverse and rapidly changing Asia-Pacific food systems, addressing FLAW requires us to look beyond the visible loss and ask:

🔎 What is the FLAW behind the FLAW?

Is it a gap in post-harvest handling?

A missing market connection?

Limited storage or processing?

Insufficient information?

Or a solution that was developed without the people who use it?

Through the Food Loss and Waste Community of Practice (FLAW-CoP), APAARI is working to connect researchers, policymakers, practitioners, innovators and other stakeholders to share knowledge, identify systemic gaps, co-create solutions and turn ideas into action.

Because reducing food loss and waste is not the responsibility of one sector or one stakeholder.

It requires collaboration across the entire food system.

🤝🌍 APAARI is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Agrinatura, held online on 22 September 2026. This marks a key achievement for APAARI in strengthening international collaboration between Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

🌱🔬🎓 The five-year partnership will connect European and Asia-Pacific expertise to advance agricultural research, innovation, higher education, capacity development and evidence-informed policy engagement. It will also promote joint programmes, resource mobilization, knowledge exchange, and a Community of Practice on Agri-Food Innovation Systems Transformation.

Dr. Ravi Khetarpal, Executive Director of APAARI, and Dr. Ioannis Dimitriou, President of Agrinatura, officially signed the MoU and will coordinate its implementation.

Together, APAARI and Agrinatura will work towards more sustainable, resilient and inclusive agri-food systems across the two regions.

🌏 APAARI participated in the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Greater Mekong Subregion Working Group on Agriculture, held on 16–17 September 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

🌱 Under the theme, “Regional Public Goods: Unlocking the Potential for the Sustainable Growth of the Greater Mekong Subregion Agrifood Sector,” the meeting explored practical pathways to strengthen regional cooperation, sustainable investment, digital trade and traceability, climate information services, natural capital, and inclusive agribusiness development.

💡 APAARI contributed to discussions on agritech information and research innovation, with particular emphasis on connecting research, knowledge, advisory services and innovation with the needs of farmers, extension workers, cooperatives and agribusinesses.

🤝 The discussions reinforced that regional cooperation should build on and connect existing national systems through trusted information, shared protocols, knowledge exchange, capacity development and inclusive partnerships. This closely aligns with APAARI’s mandate to facilitate agricultural research, innovation, knowledge management and policy dialogue for sustainable agri-food systems transformation across Asia and the Pacific.

🌾 We remains committed to supporting practical regional mechanisms that translate evidence and innovation into scalable action, while strengthening the participation of governments, research organizations, the private sector, women and youth.
