🌏 The Researchers in Agriculture for International Development Network (RAID) hosted the 5-minute Agri-Food SpeedTalk event on Friday, 24 April, at 4:00 PM (AEST).

🌱 Homaira Jahan Shonom, representing the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions, joined the session and shared insights on the regional project, “Strengthening Phytosanitary Systems for Safe Seed Trade in Asia-Pacific.”

🌾 She highlighted the project’s role in enhancing phytosanitary systems, enabling safe seed trade, and supporting farmers and agri-food systems across the region.

🌱 National Seminar on Biosecurity Risks and Mitigation Strategies in Horticultural Crops

🗓️ April 23, 2026

Dr. Ravi Khetarpal delivered a presentation on “Biosecurity Risks and Mitigation Strategies in Horticultural Crops in the Asia-Pacific.”

🌏 His presentation highlighted that the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly experiencing frequent outbreaks of devastating pests affecting horticultural crops. Managing these threats remains a significant challenge due to varying capacities and resource levels among developed, developing, and least-developed countries—making the harmonization of quarantine measures and standards more complex.

He also emphasized the critical role of regional organizations such as Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI), alongside national and international research and development in strengthening plant biosecurity across the region.

With support from partners and donors through regional initiatives, APAARI has undertaken efforts in South and Southeast Asia to:
🔹 Identify and prioritize key biosecurity challenges and solutions
🔹 Strengthen regional collaboration
🔹 Support compliance with the World Trade Organization SPS Agreement
🔹 Facilitate safe and efficient international trade in horticultural crops

🌾 These efforts continue to support more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems across the Asia-Pacific region.
