UNAIDS at the 79th World Health Assembly

UNAIDS is heading to 79th World Health Assembly ( ) taking place in Geneva from 18-23 May.

This year’s World Health Assembly comes at a critical moment for the global AIDS response. The world is closer than ever to ending AIDS as a public health threat, yet that progress is at dire risk of being lost amid converging crises, widespread volatility and deepening inequalities.

The landscape of the HIV response has changed dramatically, marked by shifts in health and HIV-specific funding and the overall aid architecture, mounting fiscal pressures, and a backlash against human rights.

At the same time, the emergence of innovations and technologies offer exciting new opportunities to end AIDS, but only if political will and sustainable investment are maintained.

UNAIDS main messages at the 79th World Health Assembly:

The HIV epidemic is not over and there is an urgent need for global solidarity to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030—no country can do it alone.

Ending AIDS is possible and a pathway exists through the Global AIDS Strategy 2026-2031 and through the upcoming United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS with the adoption of a powerful new Political Declaration on HIV.
Progress must not be lost and sustainability is key.

Investments must be made in HIV prevention, treatment and community leadership. Shifts to country ownership must be supported responsibly and responses must be based on evidence, human rights and be people focused, leaving no one behind

In Asia and the Pacific, stigma and discrimination continue to keep people from HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care.

HIV prevention coverage remains too limited, reaching only one in three gay men and other men who have s*x with men and transgender people. PrEP uptake is also far below what is needed: in 2024, fewer than 250 000 people were taking PrEP, against a regional target of 8.2 million.

On , UNAIDS calls for dignity, equality and health for all — because everyone has the right to access HIV services without fear, shame or discrimination.

Ikka Noviyanti, Executive Director of Y+ Global, delivered a powerful message at the Interactive Multi-Stakeholder Hearing ahead of the 2026 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS.

“True country ownership does not mean governments working alone. It means young people and communities at the centre of decision-making, service delivery, and accountability.”

As preparations continue for the 2026 High-Level Meeting, Ikka reminds us that community leadership must be protected, institutionalised, and sustainably financed to safeguard decades of hard-won progress in the HIV response.

The APEC Action Plan to End the HIV Epidemic (2026–2031) has officially launched.

Endorsed by all 21 APEC economies, the Action Plan sets a regional roadmap to support the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and achieve a 90% reduction in new HIV infections by 2030.

“This plan is not just a political signal—it is a practical tool for smarter investment and real impact.”
— Eamonn Murphy, UNAIDS Regional Director for Asia-Pacific and EECA

As progress remains uneven across the region, coordinated and evidence-based action is critical to accelerate results.

📢 United to End AIDS
As outlined in the recently adopted HLM Modalities Resolution (A/Res/80/256), the 2026 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS will take place on 22–23 June in New York under the theme “United to End AIDS.”
The programme will include a general debate, thematic panels and side events. The opening will feature statements by the President of the General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General, the UNAIDS Executive Director, a person openly living with HIV and a prominent figure actively engaged in the HIV response.
A key part of the process is the Multistakeholder Hearing (MSH), organized by the President of the General Assembly with support from a Multistakeholder Task Force (MSTF) facilitated by UNAIDS. This platform ensures the inclusive participation of civil society, communities, the private sector and people living with HIV in shaping the new Political Declaration.
The meeting will culminate in the adoption of a new UN Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, setting updated global targets and a framework to sustain the HIV response beyond 2030.
Each High-Level Meeting is a critical moment for countries to renew their political commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, maintain visibility of the response and ensure it remains adequately resourced.
📊 The world already has the science, medicines and resources needed.
What matters is sustained accountability, shared targets, reliable data and collective review of progress.
⚠️ While important gains have been made, progress remains uneven and increasingly under threat. Losing momentum risks reversing achievements and could cost millions of lives.
In a time of growing global uncertainty, the 2026 High-Level Meeting is a decisive moment to reaffirm a shared commitment: ending AIDS by 2030.

The APEC Action Plan to End the HIV Epidemic (2026–2031), endorsed by all 21 APEC economies, sets a shared roadmap to accelerate progress across the Asia-Pacific region.

The plan supports achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and a 90% reduction in new HIV infections by 2030.

Today, around 7 million people are living with HIV in APEC economies—accounting for nearly a quarter of new infections globally. Progress remains uneven, with rising infections in some areas.

This Action Plan focuses on stronger leadership, policy reform, prevention, testing, treatment, innovation, and sustainable financing—turning proven solutions into real impact. UNAIDS APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
