Based on research with villagers from 44 communities along the Mekong, from Chiang Rai in northern Thailand to Stung Treng in northeastern Cambodia, this article, published in the Natural History Bulletin of the Siam Society, Vol. 67, No. 1 (2025), explores the river’s ecogeographical diversity and dry-season changes.
The authors highlight the importance of local ecological knowledge, arguing that the observations and experiences of communities living along the Mekong can provide valuable insights into environmental changes that may be overlooked when relying primarily on remote sensing.

In this article, writer and arts manager Harmish Muszid brings into focus the ecological and cultural impacts of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s plan to build reinforced-concrete embankments along the Khlong Saen Saep canal in the city’s agriculturally driven Nong Chok district—the last stretch of the Khlong with earthen banks, clean water, and a traditional canal-side way of life.

📖 𝐑𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: พระราชนิพนธ์ บทลคร เรื่องอิเหนา ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย ฉบับหอพระสมุดวชิรญาณ (2464)
ภาพวาดสีสันสวยงามเหล่านี้ มาจาก “บทลคร เรื่องอิเหนา” ฉบับหอพระสมุดวชิรญาณ ตีพิมพ์ในปี พ.ศ. 2464 โดยสมเด็จพระปิตุจฉาเจ้า สุขุมาลมารศรี พระอัครราชเทวี โปรดให้พิมพ์ขึ้นเนื่องในงานฉลองพระชนมายุ ๖๐ พรรษา บทละครฉบับนี้เดิมมีเนื้อหาจาก สมุดไทย 38 เล่ม เมื่อนำมาจัดพิมพ์จึงแบ่งเป็น 3 เล่ม ซึ่งห้องหนังสือหายากของสยามสมาคมฯ เก็บรักษาเล่มที่ 1 และ 2 เอาไว้
จาก “คำอธิบายว่าด้วยบทลครอิเหนา ฉบับหอพระสมุดวชิรญาณ” พระนิพนธ์ของสมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ ได้อธิบายประวัติของบทละคร การรวบรวมต้นฉบับ และการชำระต้นฉบับก่อนจัดพิมพ์ รวมไปถึงอธิบายเรื่องภาพเหล่านี้ไว้ว่า “อนึ่งเมื่อสมเด็จพระเจ้าน้องยาเธอฯ มีรับสั่งให้พิมพ์พระราชนิพนธ์อิเหนาครั้งนี้ ทรงพระดำริห์ว่ายังมีการอันเนื่องต่อบทลครอิเหนา ซึ่งน่าจะทำขึ้นประกอบกับหนังสือซึ่งพิมพ์ใหม่อีิ ๒ อย่าง อย่างหนึ่งคือมีรูปภาพเรื่องอิเหนาซึ่งได้เขียนไว้แต่ก่อน เปนของพระบาทสมเด็จฯ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดให้เขียนไว้ก็มาก ทุกวันนี้วิธีพิมพ์จำลองรูปก็อาจจะทำได้โดยฝีมือไทยแล้ว ควรจะเลือกรูปภาพเรื่องอิเหนาที่เขียนไว้แต่ก่อนมาพิมพ์ไว้ในหนังสือนี้ ให้คนทั้งหลายได้เห็นแพร่หลายด้วย จึงได้ทรงเปนพระธุระเลือกสรรรูปภาพเรื่องอิเหนาซึ่งมีอยู่ณะที่ต่างๆ และโปรดให้กรมแผนที่ทหารบกพิมพ์รูปภาพเพิ่มเข้าในหนังสือนี้ด้วย”

These beautifully coloured illustrations are from 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙖𝙤 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙮, a classical Thai dramatic dance-drama adapted from traditional Javanese Panji folklore, published by the Vajirayana Library in 1921, and preserved in The Siam Society’s Rare Book Collection.
The edition was printed at the request of Queen Sukhumala Marasri on the occasion of her 60th birthday. The text was originally compiled from 38 volumes of manuscripts and was subsequently published in three printed volumes. The Siam Society’s Rare Book Collection holds Volumes 1 and 2.
In the preface to the Vajirayana Library edition, Prince Damrong Rajanubhab provides an account of the play’s history, the collection of its manuscripts, and the editorial process undertaken before publication. He also explains the inclusion of the illustrations. Many of the images had been drawn in earlier periods, including a considerable number commissioned during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Recognising the value of preserving and sharing these artworks, the editors selected illustrations of 𝙄𝙣𝙖𝙤 from various collections and had them reproduced in the printed edition, allowing these important visual representations of the 𝙄𝙣𝙖𝙤 tradition to be made more widely accessible to the public.
