Young India Foundation

Young India Foundation India’s driving social-economic force is its youth – and yet, India’s greatest resource is politically underrepresented.

Young India Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation making Indian politics more youth-inclusive through helping young candidates contest, generating research, and building political sensitivity. India’s youth, over 670 million people below the age of 25, accounts for an astounding 34% of India’s Gross National Income. Regardless of being a massive economic force, only 2.2% of the low

er parliament is under the age of 30. To qualify as an MP (Member of Parliament) or an MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) you must be at least 25, and you must be 30 years old to be nominated for the Rajya Sabha, making it barely possible for any youth to represent the needs of the rising generation. The age to qualify for MP and MLA positions must decrease. Our society has an ageist bias that is preventing the country’s progress by suppressing the voices of the youth. The stark lack of youth representation results in little political priority to serve the needs of the youth. It’s time that India’s youth get the opportunity to create and implement change focused on the development of their generation. It’s time for the change makers to be heard.

YIF and the Centre for Youth Policy were honored to have been invited to the Asia Democracy Assembly represented by our colleague Kriti Tiwari.

A week at ICSW 2025 was a reminder that democracy is being rewritten at every level, from how we fight disinformation to how we imagine youth participation and rebuild civic trust. The conversations underscored a simple truth: civil society isn’t just responding to democratic challenges, it’s reinventing the pathways through which communities demand honesty, dignity, and representation. Grateful for the depth, solidarity, and shared learning this space made possible.

Does the constitution get in the way of youth representation? What disenfranchisement do young people face when trying to run for public office? Are countries with more progressive laws in regard to candidacy ages truly better for young people?

We had the opportunity to talk about how age of candidacy laws impact youth political representation around the world.

We don’t talk enough about how laws in a variety of countries discourage youth participation in politics—especially the age at which you can contest for public office.

Thanks to UChicago’s Center on Democracy for giving space for a timely discussion.

Every year on National Youth Day, celebrated on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda ji, we honor his vision of empowering young people to shape the world. This year, inspired by his ideals and recognizing the power of youth leadership worldwide, we decided to expand our annual Under 30 list beyond India to include extraordinary young leaders from across the globe.

India’s youth make up a significant portion of the world’s total youth population, and their contributions to global change are immense. However, young leaders everywhere—regardless of race, nationality, or background—are shaping policies, driving innovation, and challenging the status quo. This list acknowledges the power of global youth leadership by celebrating individuals from diverse nations, cultures, and political systems who are making an impact in their communities and beyond.

By going global, we aim to shine a light on the shared challenges young leaders face—whether advocating for climate action, social justice, or economic reform—and the solutions they bring to the table. From the youngest members of national legislatures to dynamic changemakers leading grassroots initiatives, this list is a tribute to their resilience, vision, and determination.

As we celebrate these remarkable individuals on National Youth Day, we honor the global spirit of youth leadership that transcends borders. We hope their stories inspire a generation of young people, from India and beyond, to rise to the challenge of shaping a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable world.

Here are six of our honorees. Let’s celebrate their contributions and continue to support young leaders making a difference! Learn more on our website or in the link in our bio!
