📚 Celebrating 60 years of literacy, learning and opportunity

Under this year’s theme, “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity,” UNESCO is pleased to join Ministry of Education of Thailand, partners and learning communities from across the country in celebrating the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day.

For 60 years, literacy has empowered people to participate fully in society, navigate a rapidly changing world and contribute to more inclusive, peaceful and sustainable communities. Literacy is also a fundamental human right and a foundation for lifelong learning.

Yet today, 739 million young people and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills.

Let’s continue working together to advance literacy for everyone, everywhere by leaving no one behind.

📚 60 ปีแห่งการรู้หนังสือ การเรียนรู้ และโอกาสสำหรับทุกคน

ยูเนสโกร่วมกับกระทรวงศึกษาธิการของประเทศไทย ภาคีเครือข่าย และชุมชนแห่งการเรียนรู้จากทั่วประเทศ ฉลองวาระครบรอบ 60 ปี #วันที่ระลึกสากลแห่งการรู้หนังสือ (International Literacy Day) ภายใต้หัวข้อประจำปีนี้ “การรู้หนังสือเพื่อผู้คน โลก และความผาสุก” (Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity)

ตลอด 60 ปีที่ผ่านมา การรู้หนังสือช่วยเสริมพลังให้ผู้คนสามารถมีส่วนร่วมในสังคมอย่างเต็มที่ ปรับตัวและก้าวทันโลกที่เปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็ว พร้อมมีส่วนร่วมในการสร้างสังคมที่ครอบคลุม สงบสุข และยั่งยืนยิ่งขึ้น นอกจากนี้ การรู้หนังสือยังเป็นสิทธิมนุษยชนขั้นพื้นฐาน และเป็นรากฐานสำคัญของการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิต

ปัจจุบันยังมีเยาวชนและผู้ใหญ่ทั่วโลกกว่า 739 ล้านคน ที่ยังขาดทักษะการรู้หนังสือขั้นพื้นฐาน

🌏 How can multilingual education help every learner feel included?

Across Asia and the Pacific, multilingual education plays an important role in ensuring that learners can access quality education in languages they understand.

At the conference “Reimagining Sustainability: The ASEAN Interdisciplinary Dialogue on Local Knowledge,” UNESCO joined Mahidol University and partners from across the region to discuss how stronger coordination at the Asia-Pacific, South-East Asia and national levels can help advance language-inclusive and multilingual education.

Through the Asia and the Pacific Multilingual Education Working Group, UNESCO and partners are connecting expertise, sharing knowledge and supporting advocacy and policy dialogue to help countries strengthen language-inclusive education.

🎨 How can traditional craftsmanship inspire new ideas?

Earlier this July, UNESCO Bangkok and SACIT brought together artisans and creative practitioners at Wat Pho to explore Japanese lacquer techniques, including Raden and Kintsugi, and how they can inspire new ideas for Thai lacquerwork.

From the beauty of Wat Pho to Thailand’s cultural heritage, participants turned inspiration into creativity while exchanging knowledge and strengthening their craft.
Hear from participants and instructors about what they learned, what inspired their creations and why passing on craftsmanship to future generations matters.
