Meet the “Books” of the SDG Story Exchange

The SDG Story Exchange at the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development invites you to hear from our lineup of inspiring human "books" 📚—leaders in their respective communities, sharing their stories, perspectives, and expertise through engaging conversations.

🎉 Representing the youth voice for SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, we are excited to feature Sara Mahajan!

📢 Sara is the co-programme lead of ‘Leading Young Women’, a service group at SJI International, Singapore. Its primary initiative is an innovative, sustainable program that addresses period poverty in partnership with Upskills Foundation Inc., involving direct service and engagement with women and girls in the Tondo community in Manila, Phillipines. Awarded the Richard T. Krajczar Grant by the East Asia Regional Council of Schools in 2023, the project has been using the $10,000 USD funds to scale and grow its impact in the Tondo community - a densely populated landfill community where residents face severe poverty and limited access to basic services. This project champions dignity, reciprocity, and mutual learning, empowering women to be fearless leaders of change while co-creating long-term solutions that improve access to education, health, and opportunities.

💬 Whether you're curious about period poverty, female economic engagement, or the challenges facing landfill communities, Sara has stories and insights to share.

From Bangkok to Luang Prabang — a retreat that reminded us why we do this 💙

Last month, the Global Shapers Bangkok Hub spent a few meaningful days with the Global Shapers Vientiane Hub in Luang Prabang. What started as a joint retreat quickly became a space of real connection, warmth, and shared purpose.

We were deeply touched by how genuinely welcomed we felt. The kindness, care, and openness of the Vientiane Shapers made us feel at home in a different country — not as visitors, but as friends.

Through the Project Showcase and Human Library sessions, we shared stories, listened deeply, and connected beyond backgrounds, roles, or borders. It’s powerful to meet people from another place who care about the same things and are trying to create change in their own communities.

Outside the sessions, Luang Prabang itself became part of the experience: wandering through temples, getting our stomachs very happily filled at the night market (the somtam Luang Prabang really deserves the hype 😘🤌), visiting a beautiful waterfall that reset both mind and body, and slowing down together on a peaceful boat trip.

We also visited local social enterprises like Ock Pop Tok and a local Tea House, learning how natural dye sources in Laos empower local seamstresses across the country.

As Thailand and Laos, we often say we are like siblings — but this retreat made that bond feel real on a human level.

We’re grateful to everyone who made this journey meaningful, especially:
✨ Natalie Pierce, Head of Global Shapers Community
✨ Paniz Jamali, Community Manager, Asia Pacific
✨ Sanju Sachamuneewongse, Community Champion, ASEAN Mainland
✨ Caderyn Owen Jones & Sakhone Douangphachanh, Curators of Global Shapers Bangkok and Vientiane Hubs

And to our friends at and our own Bangkok Shapers — thank you for the conversations, the laughter, and the energy you shared so openly.

This retreat reminded us that impact isn’t just built through projects — it’s built through people.

🎉 Representing the youth voice for SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, we are excited to feature Renzo Gondokusumo.

📢 Renzo is a student innovator and sustainability entrepreneur developing carbon-negative, self-healing bricks that reimagine conventional construction materials. He is the Founder of Brickarya, a student-led initiative based in Indonesia focused on advancing sustainable industrial practices through environmentally responsible material innovation. Driven by the current methods’ high carbon emissions, Renzo’s work explores an alternative approach to the production of bricks from banana peel biochar, limestone, and other organic materials—materials that absorb carbon dioxide rather than emit it across their lifecycle. His current research investigates the integration of mycelium structures to enhance material strength and expand future applications. In collaboration with Professor Eden Steven and Dr Clare Evangeline at the Emmerich Research Institute, Brickarya’s vision bridges material science, circular economy principles, and sustainable design—championing low-carbon innovation for the built environment.

💬 Whether you're curious about carbon emissions, biochar, or environmentally friendly material innovation, Renzo has stories and insights to share. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and learn at APFSD13’s SDG Story Exchange!
