RECOFTC Resilient communities, sustainable and equitable forest landscapes. We are the only non-profit organization of our kind in Asia and the Pacific.
(1)

We take a long-term, landscape-based and inclusive approach to supporting local communities to secure their land and resource rights, stop deforestation, find alternative livelihoods and foster gender equity. We have more than 30 years of experience working with people and forests, and have built trusting relationships with partners at all levels. Our influence and partnerships extend from multila

teral institutions to governments, private sector and local communities. Our innovations, knowledge and initiatives enable countries to foster good forest governance, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Forests generate immense value in timber, carbon, water, biodiversity and tourism. Yet the communities managing these landscapes often see little of what flows from their land.

Fair benefit-sharing means the value produced from a community forest finds its way back to the people who protect it. When that process is transparent and equitable, communities invest more in forests, not less.

When communities can assess forest conditions, they can make informed management decisions and engage effectively with government agencies, civil society partners and investors.

This strengthens local governance and underpins community‑led conservation plans that can meet emerging standards for climate and biodiversity finance.

Carbon markets can deliver real results when people who live in and depend on forests are treated as equal partners. This rights-based toolkit helps practitioners and advocates support Indigenous Peoples and local communities to navigate complex carbon market systems.

It offers practical modules on land tenure, fair benefit-sharing and gender equality so climate finance works for the people who safeguard critical forest ecosystems.

Millions of people across Southeast Asia manage forests that their families have called home for generations, yet many still have no legal document to prove it.

Without formal tenure, communities lose their voice in decisions that reshape their landscapes and their futures. Secure tenure is what allows a community to plan for the long term, protect what they have built, and pass it on to the next generation.

🌾🔥In many forest landscapes, especially where the terrain is steep or hard to reach, reducing fuel through planned burning can lower the risk of destructive wildfires and support healthier ecosystems.

The Prescribed Burning Manual for Fuel Management, available in Thai, guides practitioners and community forest members on how to plan and conduct prescribed burns safely and responsibly in real field conditions. It sets out clear steps before, during and after burning so that fire is used with care and purpose.

🔥Knowing which areas are most exposed, how people use the land and when conditions are most dangerous helps everyone prepare before fire season starts. Strong coordination and clear roles for communities, authorities and other partners make it easier to act quickly when fires threaten forests and villages.

The Technical Guidelines on Forest Fire Prevention, Response and Recovery, written in Lao, gather practical approaches that support action before, during and after fires. They are designed to help planners, local officials and communities work together to reduce risk, respond safely and restore damaged areas.

Agroforestry can transform lives and landscapes, but it only works when the right conditions are in place. 🌱

🌍 Secure land rights so families can plan for the future

🌿 Training and access to quality seeds and planting materials

📜 Policies that support and protect farmers

💰 Markets that value their work and harvests

With secure land rights, knowledge and fair market access, farming families can build resilient agroforestry systems that support livelihoods and ecosystems.

Smallholder farmers produce more than 90 per cent of Indonesia’s 2.1 million tonnes of rubber each year. Many of them face unstable prices and degraded soils after years of monoculture. To adapt, farmers are starting to combine rubber with food crops and native tree species on the same land.

These mixed systems help families earn from several sources, strengthen local food security and rebuild soil health. Research shows that agroforestry systems store more carbon than monoculture plantations while keeping farms productive. On one hectare, farmers can now grow food, earn a stable income and protect the environment.

☕️The Central Highlands of Viet Nam produce about 1.5 million tonnes of coffee each year, making up 90 per cent of the country’s total output. But hotter weather, longer dry seasons and unpredictable rainfall are making it harder for farmers to maintain yields. Many are now moving their coffee plants under native trees to adapt.

This approach helps

✨ improve bean quality

💧 reduces water use by up to 30 per cent

⛰️ keeps soil in place on steep slopes

🦜 provides shelter for pollinators and birds

With healthier soils and more stable harvests, these farms show how coffee can thrive even as the climate changes.
