UNFPA is guided by the landmark Programme of Action that emerged from the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, or ICPD, in Cairo. There, for the very first time, 179 governments agreed that gender equality and human rights were at the heart of sustainable development, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights - ultimately a vision of rights and choices for a

ll. This was reiterated at the ICPD25 Nairobi Summit in 1994, where governments, civil society, UN partners, the private sector and other stakeholders committed to accelerating the Programme of Action in light of the Sustainable Development Goals whose vision of leaving no one behind simply cannot be achieved without achieving ICPD. UNFPA in Asia-Pacific has 22 country offices and a Pacific sub-regional office that covers 14 island-nations. In conflict settings, women and girls face greater risks of sexual violence.

But this violence doesn’t begin with conflict. It is driven by inequality, discrimination, power imbalances and impunity, with crises only exposing and intensifying these harms.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, we must go beyond response and address the root causes. That means advancing , strengthening survivor-centred justice systems, protecting rights and ensuring accountability.

Hate speech has no place in our world. Yet we see it every day, more and more online.

Women and girls are often the ones targeted, facing technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) that silences, intimidates and causes harm beyond the screen.

Stopping hate speech takes stronger systems, real action and all of us.

Stand with us to end online violence against women and girls. Say .

In Asia, midwives play a critical role in ending female ge***al mutilation (FGM).

As trusted voices, they help shift norms while navigating the issue with cultural sensitivity.

Strengthening midwives’ capacity to address FGM supports communities, protects rights and drives lasting, sustainable change.

Midwives save lives. In Asia and the Pacific, investment in midwives has helped drive a striking 65 percent reduction in maternal mortality between the years 2000 and 2023 and a 62 percent reduction in neonatal mortality since 1990.

But in recent years, progress has begun to slow.

As we gather at the 34th ICM Triennial Congress in Lisbon, let us remember that only with sustained investment in midwives can progress continue.

Older women face heightened risks of gender-based violence.

Violence against older women is far more common than we acknowledge and far less reported than it should be. In a region where the number of older persons is set to more than double by 2050, we cannot afford to keep ignoring it.

Compounded by factors like marital status or disability, violence against older women can take many forms, including physical, psychological and financial abuse, as well as neglect. It is rooted in deep-seated prejudice, dehumanising stereotypes and social norms that too often tolerate and even condone abuse.

Too often, the systems meant to protect and support survivors are inaccessible, responsive or equipped to meet the needs of older women. As a result, their experiences can go unrecognized, their needs overlooked, and their access to justice, care and support limited.

If we are serious about ending gender-based violence in Asia and the Pacific, we must strengthen the systems that enable reporting, protection and support for all women, at every age.

The government of Bangladesh has announced an investment in 25,000 new midwives by 2030 at the 34th ICM Triennial Congress.

We commend Bangladesh’s leadership in scaling up midwifery.

Midwives are one of the smartest investments we can make. With the right support, education and integration into health systems, they could help save 4.3 million lives every year by 2035.

As the 2030 deadline to end preventable maternal deaths approaches, the message is clear: we must invest in solutions that work.

With the right investment, midwives are among the most cost-effective solutions to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

Scaling midwifery care could avert around 4.3 million maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths globally every year by 2035.

UNFPA is proud to stand with partners at the 34th ICM Triennial Congress to drive the investment and action needed to reach the global target of midwives.

No one should have to navigate menstrual health alone. Yet in , many women and girls do.

For 17-year-old Shamila that changed when she joined a UNFPA-supported multipurpose youth centre in Kabul.

With access to menstrual health education and essential supplies, she gained not just information, but confidence, dignity and control over her own body.

Pregnancy does not pause for conflict, displacement or disaster.

In , maternity waiting homes are helping women stay close to skilled care before labour begins, reducing delays, improving outcomes and giving mothers and newborns a safer start.

For those in remote or crisis affected areas, reaching a health facility during labour can be difficult, risky or simply impossible. By offering a safe place to stay in the final weeks of pregnancy, these homes make timely, life saving care within reach.

Education is key to safe, healthy and fulfilled lives.

In , UNFPA and partners are equipping teachers with the tools and confidence to tackle topics like puberty, relationships and risk.

For teachers, this support is transformative. For students, it is creating safe spaces to talk openly about peer pressure, substances, relationships and the changes of adolescence.
