In the aftermath of The American Secret War in Laos, progress is as needed as it is possible. A huge thank you to Theresa Lin and Yuting Li with the Henry Luce Foundation for showcasing both the honest situation of UXO in Laos and the determination of Legacies through adversity.

It is our mission to serve as a reminder that “legacies of conflict do not end when fighting stops,” and we are proud to champion this mission alongside the Henry Luce Foundation. Over the years, Legacies has developed free educational resources and programs, not only keeping the flame of history alive, but also spreading it throughout the national diaspora so that more people may learn, remember, and mobilize.

Though the weight of American History often seems insurmountable, articles such as these are important to offer glimmers of healing and accountability, while not neglecting the full truth of the past.

In honor of International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament, we are sharing this beautiful piece from the desk of our KOUL-Mander in Chief, Sera Koulabdara.

Sera powerfully connects her personal childhood memories of stories about Giants and the Plain of Jars with the ongoing humanitarian consequences of unexploded ordnance in Laos today. The essay also highlights women-led efforts to reclaim dignity and restore communities through craft, demining, and advocacy.

Thank you to our friends at The Diplomat for amplifying this special story, Laos, and Legacies’ mission.

Regardless of what you believe: myth or history, there’s an undeniable truth: We are descendants of Giants.💪🏽

With a small staff of just 1.5, the heartbeat of Legacies of War has always been our incredible volunteers. 🧡 Today, we are thrilled to introduce you to the immensely talented Bay Koulabdara Lam Vong Circle Member, Chief Photographer, Artist, Architect, and Creator Extraordinaire!

Bay’s journey with Legacies began in 2015 when he generously used his architectural talents to help design and arrange our office space. (We can all use strong, wildly talented people in our corner!)

Since that very first day, Bay has been a pillar of support. Whether he is capturing powerful imagery, bravely sharing his own story, staffing events, donating, or designing Legacies materials, he never hesitates to help.

Bay’s most important contribution? Bringing us our KOUL-Mander in Chief, Sera! Kop jai lai lai der.

Today, we are honored to share some of his breathtaking photos and illustrations with our community. We also want to send a massive congratulations to Bay for having his work featured on the cover of the 2026 Asian Festival Magazine in Columbus, Ohio! We are incredibly proud of you and this well-deserved milestone.

Please join us in showing some love and endless gratitude to this Rockstar Advocate!

Both Sera and I still have family in Laos — family that farm rice, little cousins that walk to school, and elders that still carry the weight of war. This work is deeply personal to us because of that but also because of you.

Our work is unique as we center survivor-led advocacy, preserve shared history once kept secret from Americans, and build a more peaceful future with our Advocacy Ambassadors.

This September, nations from across the world gather in Vientiane, Laos, the most bombed country per capita in history, for the The Third Review Conference (3RC) of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. We will be there, as we were when Laos hosted the first Meeting of States Parties in 2010. But this time, we’re bringing something new.

An exhibit. A framework built from twenty years of movement-building, grounded in History, Healing, and Hope, that any community living with the lasting impacts of war can adapt and call their own.

The Chino Cienega Foundation is matching every gift dollar for dollar, up to $5,000. That means the next dollar you give becomes two. Every contribution brings us closer to our $10,000 goal and closer to Vientiane.

Your gift helps to fund the trip, the exhibit, and the programs that made this moment possible: the Legacies Library, The Originals, and the Advocacy Ambassadors carrying this work into the future.

We built this together. Help us share it with the world! Double your donation today —> https://voices.funraise.org/

Susu, keep fighting,
Danae

We will continue to say it together: bombs do not bring peace. Thank you to our dear friend Christine Ahn for amplifying this message and doing so by bringing together voices across diasporas:

“Diaspora-led peace organizations — such as Women Cross DMZ, Afghans For A Better Tomorrow, Legacies of War, and the National Iranian American Council — share a premise: that genuine security is built through relationships, accountability, and political resolution — not through bombardment.”

We are honored to be featured alongside our friends as we continue to raise awareness of our shared history and responsibility to repair.

So much of the work we do at Legacies of War is fueled by the incredible people who walk alongside us.

Today on the LEGACIES podcast, we are honored to feature one of our dearest friends and champions: Ben Rhodes, Emeritus Board member of Legacies of War, author, and former Deputy National Security Addvisor for President Barack Obama.

A decade ago, in 2016, President Obama made history as the first sitting U.S. president to visit Laos. It was a monumental moment that acknowledged the deep pain of the past while opening the door to a new era of partnership. Ben was there, helping to shape the diplomacy of that very moment—and his unwavering support has meant the world to us ever since.

In this powerful new episode, our Chief of Mission Advancement and Communications, Danae Hendrickson, sits down with Ben to reflect on the 10th anniversary of the U.S.–Laos Comprehensive Partnership and what it means today to continue the work of healing land held hostage by war.

We also want to give a massive shoutout to Ben’s incredible work as a writer! Be sure to check out his new book, “All We Say: The Battle for American Identity: A History in 15 Speeches” alongside his other fantastic reads, “After the Fall” and “The World As It Is.”

Tune in to this inspiring conversation wherever you get your podcast.🙏🏽

Kho Siab — the Hmong word for the ache that sits between what was and what remains.

The land, at a glance, appears healed. Even peaceful.

Beneath the surface, there are histories that have not yet been resolved.

Thank you to our friend, Yia Vue, for so generously sharing your story this Hmong American Day; expressing in words what many have held tightly for generations.

“For Hmong American Day, although there is much to celebrate, there is also much to remember and to hold onto. There is a legacy that lives on in each of us, generation after generation, marked by a history not of our making, yet made nonetheless; but we are still here as we have always been. Throughout Hmong history, resilience and survival have been the marker of our people and we carry that on. The work that Legacies of War does reflects in the communities they serve, all those who had survived the American Secret War, both here and back in Laos. It reflects much of my own work, a push to bring more visibility to a marginalized and often underserved community. We are bridges between past and present, between those who lived through the war and those still living with its consequences, and between communities like mine in the diaspora and the land that continues to hold our history.”

Asking your family to share their story can be a daunting task. There is a reason why so few of us have been able to record our family’s stories. It requires courage, vulnerability, and proximity. In this episode of LEGACIES, Amber Inthavong shares her story of sitting down with her mother and honoring what she learned through writing. In this journey of discovery, we witness the healing that can come from storytelling and representation of our shared experiences.

This Mother’s Day, honor the matriarchs in your life by asking for their stories or by sharing your own. 💜 Listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts!!

Thank you do our dear , Legacies Board Member emeritus, for hosting this special episode and to our sponsors and

In honor of Earth Month, we share deep gratitude to our friends at Common Dreams for helping us share this powerful piece from our very own KOUL-mander in Chief, Sera Koulabdara, and Founding member of our Advocacy Ambassador Program, Kendall Silwonuk.

In Laos and Ukraine, farmers face the same invisible enemy beneath their feet: explosive remnants of war. Still, they harvest and feed their communities.

For the farmers of Laos, that refusal to walk away has stretched across generations — decades after the last bombs fell, families still cultivate fields laced with unexploded ordnance, knowing the ground beneath them may still carry the weight of a war the world has largely forgotten. For Ukraine’s farmers, that reality is still unfolding, measured in drone-shadowed harvests and fields no tractor should have to cross.

Across continents and generations, the story echoes: when war ends, threats remain soil-deep.

We stand with every farmer who refuses to surrender their field — or their hope — to the violence of the past. Land should nourish life, not threaten it. We will keep working until that is true everywhere.
