👍 Thailand’s government has proposed amendments to update the surrogacy law, which would expand access to services.

Currently, surrogacy law defines the service as being for a “husband and wife”. The new amendments would change this language to be “spouses”, opening up surrogacy to same-s*x couples. The new amendments would also increase regulatory oversight of surrogacy.

Public comment on the amendments is open until July 31.

The 2026 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDs falls short of the ambition needed to reverse recent setbacks and effectively respond to the HIV pandemic. Ongoing challenges between support for gender equality, SRHR, human rights on the one hand, and development justice on the other reflect inequalities in the decision-making process and fractures in the negotiations.

👎 The S*x Worker Protection Bill has stalled in Thailand’s House of Representatives, following a motion that designated it as a money bill (a type of legislation concerning government revenue). It must now be certified by the prime minister before it can be debated in the House. The certification process has no deadline.

This bill would create a S*x Worker Protection Centre, alongside recognizing s*x workers as employees, making them eligible for the social security system.

👍 On 18 June, Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered equal marriage rights for LGBTIQ individuals, clarifying marriage laws and building on previous legal victories like Sunil Babu Pant and Others v. Government. This new ruling ensures equal protection for gender and s*xual minority couples, following a 2023 interim order that established a separate registry for "non-traditional couples". Once enacted this will make Nepal the 3rd country in Asia to recognize same-s*x marriage. 🥳

Landmark UN Report Calls to Eliminate Violence and Discrimination experienced by Le***an, Bis*xual and Q***r Women!

The Independent Expert on SOGIE presented recommendations to Member States at to eliminate violence and discrimination experienced by le***an, bis*xual and q***r women.

This report "is an important milestone in recognising that le***an, bis*xual, and q***r women experience distinct forms of violence and discrimination that are often rendered invisible in both feminist and LGBTQI+ spaces. It provides a powerful framework for advocacy and accountability, " highlights Jean Chong, ED of Asia Feminist LBQ Network, and APA Member.

The reports recognizes that LBQ women experience systemic violations of their rights to health, property, inheritance, freedom of movement, access to justice and family life. These abuses reflect enduring misogyny across institutions and the broader structural subordination of women.

"It is an important tool for APA members, partners and allies to strengthen their advocacy, amplify LBQ women-led voices, engage with national and international human rights processes, and push for dedicated funding and policy responses that address LBQ women specific experiences of violence and discrimination."
