On 1 August 2026, the Swiss Society Bangkok (SSB), together with around 320 guests, celebrated the 735th anniversary of Switzerland—under perfect conditions: beautiful weather, excellent food, and a warm, festive atmosphere.
As tradition dictates, the celebration took place at the residence of the Swiss Ambassador in Bangkok. The first guests arrived from 3:30 p.m., and from 4:00 p.m. they were welcomed with a glass of Swiss wine kindly offered by the Embassy. The elegant garden party, set under a festive tent, provided the ideal setting for connections within the Swiss community and with friends of Switzerland.
Guests were treated to a rich Swiss buffet. From classic grilled and sausage specialties to a wide selection of salads and traditional desserts such as Engadine nut tart, carrot cake, and chocolate mousse—there was something for every taste. Musically, the event was accompanied by the Swiss accordion duo Roberto Imfeld and Peter Jenni from Hua Hin, who created an authentic Swiss atmosphere.
The official part began at 6:00 p.m. with a welcome address by SSB President Josef Schnyder. In his speech, he recalled the origins of Switzerland in 1291 and emphasized the values that continue to shape the country today: independence, democracy, reliability, and solidarity. He also highlighted the importance of living these values abroad and maintaining a strong connection to the homeland.
Special attention was given to the role of Swiss citizens living abroad and the importance of a strong community. The Swiss Society Bangkok, he noted, is not only a meeting place but also a network, a support system, and a voice for the Swiss abroad in Bern.
This was followed by an address from the Swiss Ambassador, H.E. Pedro Zwahlen. In his speech, he reflected on his time in Thailand with evident warmth and deep gratitude. It became clear that his commitment extended far beyond a purely diplomatic role and was something very close to his heart.
He paid special tribute to the people of Thailand, emphasizing their openness and friendliness. These qualities, he noted, are not to be taken for granted and could serve as an example elsewhere. His words were authentic and personal and were very well received by the audience.
This was followed by the broadcast of the address by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Guy Parmelin. Guests then joined in singing the Thai and Swiss national anthems—a moving moment that vividly expressed the strong ties between the two countries.
The celebration was also marked by many encounters and shared emotions. Special thanks go to the Swiss Embassy for its generous hospitality, as well as to all helpers and supporters—especially Chef Alessandro Haab and the team from Gourmet Primo—who made this event possible.
The 2026 Swiss National Day celebration in Bangkok once again demonstrated that, even far from home, 1 August is celebrated with great heart, pride, and a strong sense of community.
