Formed through encounters with people, place, and time, through exploration and collaboration within local contexts.
This piece reflects on “regeneration” across public art, individuals, and communities, through participation, storytelling, dialogue, and shared experiences.

Gino is a social innovator and a student of history and culture. His practice examines the past, particularly in Southeast Asia, in order to adapt knowledge into forms of social innovation and development that can regenerate both society and the environment. He is also a member of Ctrl+R Collective, with whom we previously collaborated in an exhibition in 2024.
-
His recent work involves the use of technology to better manage resources and supply chains, particularly in agriculture.
In this project, as Founder of Drone Training / EdTech at in Phuket, Gino played a key role in capturing drone shots and aerial documentation. His contribution draws on both technical expertise and contextual awareness, including real world drone operation, aviation law, safety, and the ability to read the specific conditions of the site.
-
Typically, drones in Phuket are used within the frameworks of tourism, real estate, and construction to document and construct visual narratives of space from above. This reflects how urban territories are perceived, organized, and made visible in terms of function and use.
-
However, within the context of artistic research and documentation, the drone gradually shifts away from its conventional role. It becomes a way of seeing that reveals the layered conditions within a single space, where nature, development, tourism, and everyday life coexist without ever being fully separated.
-
From this elevated and distant perspective, the images do not simply present the beauty of the sea, but begin to expose patterns of construction, concentrations of people, and subtle everyday behaviors occurring simultaneously within the same site. At the same time, traces of building, use, occupation, and disappearance emerge as overlapping conditions that continue to persist.

As a collective, we seek space and time to grow and experiment, creating an environment where each member can lead while welcoming contributions from everyone and new collaborations.
Reflection by Ctrl+R Collective invites dialogues through local flavors, unfolding thoughts and emotions of place and regeneration through taste and conversation.

𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 was led by Dharath Hoonchamlong through a sensory experience of regenerative, zero waste beverages, transforming overlooked materials into taste, paired with local herbs and fruits, and connecting ideas of regeneration with Sea Sand Sun Sala and objects from Ctrl+R Collective and collaborators.

This gathering continues from the fabric dyeing workshop led by Jakapan Inhom in collaboration with Landin. The fabrics became part of the dialogue as gathering blankets, display textiles, and gifts for participants.

Objects and tools within the workshop were contributed by the collective and people we encountered, including a mud dyed and ocean washed picnic cloth by Jakapan Inhom in collaboration with Landin, 3D printed bio material glass by Spirulina Society, a small broom by lokal.somehow, and coasters made from post consumer plastic by MORE.
Set among the sea, sand, and sun of Sea Sand Sun Sala, participants were invited to reflect on nature, the artworks by Apisara Hophaisarn, Hutsama Juntaratana, Jakapan Inhom, Panlert Srisroi, and Tommy Hanson, and the dialogue itself.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this meaningful exchange.

Continuing from the previous day, the SALA becomes a site of shared public use — a circle for resting, listening, and gathering on fabrics dyed collectively with seawater and natural materials.
This session extends the question of Regeneration within public art by working closely with people and the surrounding context. With connectivity, community, ingredients, culture, and locality through food and beverages, serving as a gentle medium for dialogue — not to reach fixed conclusions, but to allow reflections, sensations, and exchanges to gradually unfold within the space.

A collective dyeing session using seawater and local natural materials such as soil and tropical almond leaves. Each step becomes an act of observing, waiting, and allowing nature to shape the outcome.
The fabrics created through this process are not merely the result of learning a dyeing technique; they will be carried forward as part of the site itself — becoming shared ground for the reflection circle on the following day.

Beach Chair for Free is both a functional object and a quiet intervention, offered in response to the familiar scene of beach chair rentals along Phuket’s busy beach fronts. In many tourist-heavy areas, access to shade and seating often comes at a cost, framing even the act of resting as a transaction within a commodified landscape.

This work proposes an alternative: a sand-casting device that compresses loose beach sand into a temporary seating block. Using simple moulds and the abundance of sand and seawater itself, the chair can be formed directly on site, free of charge and free from ownership.

Part sculpture, part tool, Beach Chair for Free invites visitors to reconsider ideas of value, territory, and leisure. It reclaims the beach as a public commons—offering rest as a right, not a rental.

Beach Umbrella # 1–6 examines the beach umbrella as both a functional object and a cultural symbol of tropical leisure. Along Phuket’s shoreline, umbrellas shape how humans occupy and claim space within the natural landscape—offering shade, comfort, and a small zone of control amid the vast openness of sea and sky.

Within this Sala, the umbrellas are reconfigured into a dispersed, soft-boundary pavilion. Deconstructed and reassembled, each retains its familiar commercial frame but is fitted with a new textile canopy coloured through a seawater-based natural dyeing process and printmaking.

These altered forms offer moments of shelter while prompting reflection on the extractive culture of tourism, the impermanence of constructed paradises, and the ongoing conversation between human occupation and coastal ecologies.

Sea, Sand, Sun Sculpture #1–3 is a series of process-based works that explore the relationship between sand, seawater, and sunlight as interconnected coastal ecosystems. The project began with on-site casting experiments that observed how forms emerge directly from coastal conditions. These studies informed the development of a controlled “sandbox” environment, where sand from Nai Harn Beach was shaped with water under human influence and stabilised using natural binders tied to the southern landscape—such as seaweed, natural rubber, and clay—to create forms with varying degrees of permanence.
Once installed, each piece becomes a responsive surface for seawater; flowing, absorbing, eroding, evaporating, and crystallising across the sculpted sand. The sculptures perform as evolving records. Their shifting forms reveal a quiet choreography between material, gravity, and time, offering insight into the subtle agencies embedded within the coastal landscape.

A reimagined tropical paradise, a site of transformation. Here, sea, sand, and sun exist in continual negotiation—between erosion and construction, reclaiming and offering, extraction and regeneration.

SEA SAND SUN SALA explores the beachside material narratives of Phuket, framing seawater, sand, and sunlight not merely as picturesque elements but as resources and transformative agencies. The exhibition interrogates how these coastal forces behave through a series of installations, revealing how natural processes are not incidental but integral to the formation of new possibilities.
