🤝 Finding the right research partner is just the beginning.

Effective ASEAN–Japan research cooperation also requires the ability to align priorities, navigate different perspectives, and build shared understanding.

Through JAIF-supported initiatives, AUN/SEED-Net, together with the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP) and the ASEAN University Network (AUN), contributes to strengthening the skills of STI coordinators to foster meaningful and mutually beneficial research collaboration between ASEAN and Japan.

Together, we are building not only research partnerships, but also the capacity to make those partnerships work. 🌏🔬

The AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference on Environmental Engineering 2026 (RCEnvE2026) was successfully held in conjunction with the 1st Annual Conference of the Cambodian Society for Environmental Science and Engineering (CSE2026) on 22–23 September 2026 at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC). As part of AUN/SEED-Net’s Regional Conference, the event brought together researchers, academics, students, government representatives and industry partners to exchange knowledge, share research, and explore solutions to environmental challenges.

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡, 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
The Regional Conference provided a platform for researchers, academics, students, and professionals from Cambodia and other countries to exchange research ideas, share perspectives, and explore opportunities for collaboration.
It was particularly encouraging to see students and young researchers actively contributing to the event through research presentations and posters, support for conference organisation, and showcases of products and outcomes from their research.
These interactions created opportunities for the next generation to share ideas, gain experience, and connect with researchers and professionals across the region.

The Regional Conference also marked an important milestone for Cambodia with the official launch of the Cambodian Society for Environmental Science and Engineering (CSE).
The successful 1st Annual Conference of CSE provided a new platform for Cambodia’s environmental science and engineering community to connect and grow.
AUN/SEED-Net was pleased to support this milestone through the Regional Conference and congratulates CSE on the successful launch of the Society and its 1st Annual Conference.

The AUN/SEED-Net Secretariat dispatched a team to attend and celebrate the success of the final Regional Conference of 2026. Organized by AMTEC, UTM, the joint AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference on Environmental Engineering (RCEnvE) 2026 and International Conference on Sustainable and Environmental Technology (ISET) 2026 took place at Pulai Springs Resort in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from 22–24 September 2026.

As the fifth and final AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference of the year, the event brought the 2026 series to a strong close. Beyond this milestone, several features made the conference especially memorable.

✨ 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬
The conference underscored the value of interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration. Its central focus on the use of membranes and membrane technologies for resource recovery and environmental applications demonstrated how research can move beyond laboratory studies and academic publications to address practical challenges. It also highlighted the importance of bringing together expertise from different disciplines and sectors.

✨ 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐌𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤
A special feature for this Regional Conference was the “Mock Interview Session,” co-organized by the STI Coordination Project team (AUN, AUN/SEED-Net, and Kyoto University) and the Regional Conference organizing committee (UTM). Selected young researchers presented their project proposals and received feedback from a panel of experts representing academia, industry, funding agencies, and a range of research fields. This practical, multidisciplinary format offered a valuable learning experience beyond that of a conventional academic conference.

A campus visit gave participants the opportunity to tour laboratories and learn about the ongoing SATREPS project at UTM. The experience sparked new ideas and broadened participants’ perspectives by connecting conference discussions with research in practice.

✨ 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤
The AUN/SEED-Net team also had a valuable opportunity to reconnect with alumni from Phases 3 and 4, as well as professors who have actively contributed to the Network. Conversations explored how the Project can engage more alumni in future activities, involve industry more meaningfully, and develop new avenues for collaboration.

🎉 Celebrating 70 Years of Engineering Excellence: MEAFD 2026 & VCFM 29!

Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) is proud to host the AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Fluid Dynamics (MEAFD 2026), held jointly with the 29th Vietnam Conference on Fluid Mechanics (VCFM 29) in September, 2026. Supported by AUN/SEED-Net, VAFM, and JICA, this milestone event serves as a centerpiece for the official celebrations marking HUST's 70th anniversary.

All technical presentations and poster sessions are concentrated into a high-impact single day on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Key highlights include distinguished keynote lectures by prominent Japanese scholars, including Prof. Manabu Tanaka (The University of Osaka) on arc welding technology and Prof. Keiichi Ishihara (Kyoto University) on global energy demand scenarios, alongside an STI coordination address by Prof. Hideaki Ohgaki (Kyoto University). Delegates also explored parallel sessions covering intelligent systems, fluid and thermal sciences, sustainable energy, and automotive engineering. Bringing together Vietnam’s national fluid mechanics community with academics, researchers, and leaders across ASEAN and Japan, this conference offers an unmatched forum for regional collaboration.

AUN/SEED-Net took part in the International Conference on Geological Engineering and Geosciences (ICGoES 2026), held from 10–11 September 2026 in association with the AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference of Geological and Georesource Engineering (RC GeoE). Hosted by Universitas Gadjah Mada at its Faculty of Engineering, the event centered on the theme “Advancing Geo-resource Research for Environmental and Economic Resilience: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities.”

Held in Yogyakarta and accessible online, the conference welcomed participants from universities across Indonesia, Japan, ASEAN, and beyond, together with representatives from the industry sector. This hybrid format reflected the event’s broad regional and international reach while enabling wider participation and knowledge exchange.

Through more than 60 oral and poster presentations, researchers shared insights and emerging approaches across geological engineering, geosciences, and geo-resource development. Discussions underscored the field’s important role in addressing shared challenges, including environmental sustainability, economic resilience, and engineering contributions to sustainable development in the region and beyond.

The program featured keynote presentations by distinguished professors from Kyoto University, Hokkaido University, Kyushu University, and RWTH Aachen University, alongside invited talks from industry speakers. Their contributions enriched the conference dialogue and strengthened the link between academic research and practical applications in geological and georesource engineering.

In addition to the technical program, the conference offered a valuable opportunity for the AUN/SEED-Net team to reconnect with alumni, researchers, and lecturers who continue to play an active role in the network. These conversations opened fresh perspectives on current collaboration in Geological Engineering and identified future opportunities to further strengthen regional partnerships.

The successful convening of ICGoES 2026 and RC GeoE marks another meaningful milestone for one of AUN/SEED-Net’s flagship programs. More importantly, it reaffirmed the value of sustained collaboration and strong human-to-human connections in addressing common challenges.
