The Dasvand Project

The past several months have seen the Sikh Sangat globally coming together in remarkable ways to celebrate Guru Nanak Devji’s teachings, blessings and legacy in honor of His 550th birth anniversary (Gurpurab). The year long festivities include not only religious and educational activities, but also the release of commemorative coins and ecological initiatives such as tree-planting. The Dasvand Project is a socially meaningful initiative aimed at raising funds to educate 550 children in the Rural Education Revolution program in Baru Sahib in Punjab and Northern India. Dasvand means "a tenth part" and refers the act of donating ten percent of one's harvest, both financial and in the form of time and service such as seva to the Gurdwara and anywhere else. It falls into Guru Nanak Dev'Jis concept of Vand Chhako (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dasvand)

In order to meet our fund-raising goal, we are commissioning a limited number of paintings of Sri Harmindar Sahib by Thai artist Khun Somsong Leoseng, who employs a technique that is a mixture of modern and traditional Thai art with layers of acrylic paint to bring the Golden Temple alive on canvas. All proceeds from the sale of each painting, after the artist fee is covered at cost, will go towards the tuition fees for a full annual school year for all children.
