📌 The International Commission of Jurists - Asia & the Pacific, together with EarthRights International, the International Human Rights Program, University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and a community member from Kyauk Phyu Township, filed a complaint with Canada’s National Contact Point concerning the role of Canadian company Hatch Associates Ltd. in a major infrastructure project in Rakhine State, Myanmar.

The complaint raises concerns regarding the environmental impact assessment process for the project in a conflict zone, including the absence of meaningful consultation with affected communities amid ongoing armed conflict and widespread human rights violations.

📌 The International Commission of Jurists - Asia & the Pacific welcomes the publication of the Thai Supreme Court President’s Recommendations on the adjudication of cases filed in bad faith on 29 May 2026, marking an important development in efforts to address strategic lawsuits against public participation ( ) in .

The guidance seeks to clarify the application of Section 161/1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, including circumstances in which courts may dismiss cases brought in bad faith. While the development is welcome, significant gaps remain, particularly in relation to civil proceedings and public prosecutions, where many SLAPP cases continue to arise.

On 22 May 2026, the International Commission of Jurists - Asia & the Pacific, together with partners, convened a seminar at the Parliament Building in Bangkok bringing together representatives from the judiciary, prosecution, government agencies, civil society, and affected communities to discuss reforms needed to address strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) in Thailand.

Speakers shared how SLAPPs continue to place heavy burdens on activists, journalists, human rights defenders, and others speaking out in the public interest, while highlighting persistent gaps in legal protections and procedures to prevent litigation from being used to silence public participation.

Paradigm Initiative condemns, in the strongest terms, the actions of the Government of Zambia that have now led to the cancellation of RightsCon 2026 that was set to hold in Lusaka, Zambia, from May 5th, 2026.

We are working with our partners to release a joint statement but are sad that a global event that was coming to Sub-Saharan Africa for the first time was disrupted under worrying circumstances that touch on Zambia’s own commitments and obligations.

We express solidarity with our partners, Access Now at this time and extend the same to thousands of colleagues from all over the world who are either already in Lusaka, are in-flight at this time, or were set to arrive over the next few days.
