This landmark launch brings the country closer to its national development goal of establishing 30 operational Justice Zones by 2028.

During the formal launch, Supreme Court PH Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo commended the measurable, positive impact of the Justice Zone model on reducing case backlogs and jail congestion, noting that institutions work best when they do not operate in silos, but in active partnership.

Through the enactment of its 2025 Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Code, San Fernando City is leading by example - weaving equity, social development, and strong administrative governance together to ensure that justice is swift, fair, and accessible to all.

The EU-GOJUST Programme is incredibly proud to see the synergy between local government commitment and national justice sector principals deliver real-world solutions to communities.

ℹ️ About the EU-GOJUST Programme:

More than 40 years after the end of the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia continues to grapple with the legacy of one of the darkest chapters in its history. Between 1975 and 1979, an estimated two million people lost their lives under the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge through ex*****on, starvation, forced labour, and disease.

To help address this challenge, the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre in Phnom Penh developed an interactive educational smartphone application on Cambodia’s history under the Khmer Rouge. The initiative uses innovative digital learning tools to make historical education more accessible and engaging for young people.

Today, with nearly 70 per cent of Cambodia’s population under the age of 30, educating younger generations about this history remains essential to promoting peace, understanding, and preventing history from repeating itself.

To help address this challenge, the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in Phnom Penh developed an interactive educational smartphone application on Cambodia’s history under the Khmer Rouge. The initiative uses innovative digital learning tools to make historical education more accessible and engaging for young people.

By encouraging open dialogue, preserving collective memory, and supporting education through technology, this initiative contributes to healing, reconciliation, and the promotion of lasting peace in Cambodia.

In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNOPS is supporting a major initiative to enhance early warning systems and strengthen resilience to hydro-meteorological hazards in Timor-Leste.

With $8 million in funding, UNOPS will support the procurement, installation, and commissioning of specialized early warning systems equipment, while also providing human resources support to the UNEP-led Green Climate Fund (GCF) project.

As climate change continues to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including floods, landslides, and prolonged droughts, this initiative will help communities better prepare for and respond to disasters, while strengthening sustainable development across the country.

Work continues to advance at Site 1 – Tungaru Central Hospital under the Kiribati Australia Climate Security Initiative (KACSI) in South Tarawa.

This month, the project was pleased to host representatives from the Australian High Commission, Kiribati for a site visit to observe ongoing works, including the installation of geotextile sand containers. These works are strengthening the existing seawall and enhancing the resilience of critical health infrastructure against coastal erosion and the growing impacts of climate change.

Delivered by local contractor Sunlight Enterprises, progress on site remains strong. This milestone is particularly significant for Kiribati, marking the first application of this coastal protection technology in the country, and the first time in the Pacific that such works are being implemented by a locally based Pacific Islands contractor.

The geotextile sand container system offers an affordable, scalable, and locally adaptable approach to coastal protection. It supports long-term resilience while also strengthening local technical capacity and advancing Pacific-led solutions to climate adaptation.

Through KACSI, UNOPS continues to support the Government of Kiribati and partners in delivering innovative, practical, and sustainable climate resilience infrastructure, while building expertise and capacity across the Pacific.
